    Department

    This position is within FSU's Department of Information Technology Services (ITS).

    The Research Computing Center (RCC) at Florida State University enables research and education by maintaining a multifaceted campus cyberinfrastructure and by providing training opportunities and dedicated consulting for all faculty, staff, and students.

    Responsibilities

    This position is responsible for the management and coordination of the Research Application Group at RCC, while providing guidance and direction to programming consultation, technical advice, and troubleshooting support on behalf of an array of researchers across the university who are engaged with Research IT. Responsible for conducting research as appropriate for projects or initiatives for the research application group. This position will have a strong focus on the support of data science and AI-related research projects.

    Responsible for engaging with university researchers to understand the requirements of their research problems so that advanced technical expertise, mainly involving data science, can be provided to them. The Specialist shall work with other Research IT, campus IT, and FSU libraries staff to provide the necessary expertise, including developing software, modifying source code, installing software and developing databases, diagnosing complex software problems, and working with manufacturers as necessary to ensure timely replacement of faulty or out-of-date hardware and software.

    Responsible for leading the RCC application team by coordinating software deployment with the RCC systems team, developing a strategy for research applications at RCC in collaboration with the RCC Director, and coordinating deployment of software with the RCC systems team and the operations manager.

    Responsible for working closely with the other Data Science and Application Specialists and IT staff to provide expert technical advice to university researchers and administrators on data science solutions to problems, for example, as part of advisory committees. Responsible for keeping abreast of developments in data science, including in machine learning and artificial intelligence, and proactively identifying problems where such approaches may be beneficial to university researchers.

    Provides tutorials, as needed, updating interested parties on data science developments. Mentors and trains staff and student interns assigned to application support tasks or research projects, for example, through the FSUIntern or Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program initiative. The Specialist may participate in small research projects with RCC interns and/or external research groups.

    Qualifications

    Bachelors degree in Computer Science, MIS, or other appropriate degree and four years of experience; or a high school diploma/equivalent and experience equal to eight years. (Note: post-high school education can substitute for experience at the equivalent rate.)

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Working knowledge of the Linux operating system
    • Experience with research support and different types of research software applications, like Matlab or R.
    • Management experience.
    • Some programming experience.
    • Affinity with non-STEM fields like digital humanities, social work or social sciences.

    What is a typical day like in this position?

    The application team at RCC is responsible for managing the research applications at RCC, and supporting FSU faculty and students with research computing support requests.

    What can I expect in the first 60 - 90 days?

    The RCC team manages a complex system of servers, network infrastructure, and storage systems, and 800+ research applications that serve 1000+ users. Although there will be a lot of information to absorb, you'll have a collaborative team to help you get acclimated.
