Description

Boston University Information Services & Technology (IS&T) is seeking applicants with diverse skills and experience to join our innovative and inclusive community. Join us as the Manager, AI & Research Computing Initiatives, where you will lead IS&T's strategy and planning for artificial intelligence in research computing within Research Computing Services (RCS). You will set and drive the technical roadmap for AI-enabled research computing, coordinate the facilitation, technology, and infrastructure support RCS provides to Boston University researchers, and serve as the primary technical bridge between IS&T and the University's academic and research community. As part of RCS, you will supervise the team executing this work day-to-day and partner with research computing leadership on the broader research computing strategy, specifically representing the AI/ML dimension. This position is eligible for a hybrid work schedule.

You Will:

  • Set and drive the technical roadmap for AI-enabled research computing, including GPU and accelerator capacity planning, containerized and AI workflows, and MLOps tooling.
  • Anticipate emerging compute, data-pipeline, and model-serving needs; translate them into infrastructure plans; and serve as IS&T's internal resource on AI infrastructure. Coordinate RCS staff daily work on research projects, incident management, and service request fulfillment.
  • Follow up on requests and incidents at risk of becoming overdue, and coordinate across IS&T to ensure the necessary support and engagement are in place from technical units and research groups.
  • Supervise, mentor, and develop the team executing this work by setting priorities and workload, managing service delivery, and supporting performance management, professional development, hiring, and onboarding.
  • Create annual, monthly, and ad hoc resource reports on system utilization, storage services, buy-in utilization, and other operational metrics.
  • Provide business process analysis for research project workflows, including large projects hosted on Secure Research Enclaves or other regulated research systems, and engage with RCS Operations on chargeback and service models as needed.
  • Coordinate academic and non-academic training provided by RCS staff, including synchronous and asynchronous training and video tutorials.
  • Coordinate and manage documentation updates on RCS TechWeb pages and other RCS documentation sources.

Required Skills

You Will Have:

  • Experience developing or leading AI, machine learning, research computing, or advanced computing infrastructure strategy and roadmaps.
  • Knowledge of GPU and accelerator capacity planning, containerized and AI workflows, data pipelines, model-serving needs, and MLOps tooling.
  • Experience coordinating technical projects, incident management, service requests, and cross-functional support across technical and research groups.
  • Experience supervising and developing staff, setting priorities and workload, managing service delivery, and supporting hiring and onboarding.
  • Experience creating operational reports, analyzing business processes, and developing workflows for research computing or regulated research environments.

Bonus Qualifications:

  • If you do not meet these, you are still encouraged to apply; we value employees with a willingness to learn.
  • Experience supporting AI-intensive, grant-funded research or working directly with faculty, research computing champions, and research labs.
  • Experience with Secure Research Enclaves, regulated research systems, chargeback models, or research computing service models.
  • Experience coordinating synchronous and asynchronous technical training, video tutorials, and technical documentation.
