Summary

Under the direction of the Coordinator or Director, the Mammography Technologist is responsible for performing high-quality mammographic and general diagnostic imaging procedures, including bone density (DEXA) scans, in accordance with physician orders and established protocols. This role includes operating both mammography and DEXA equipment utilizing ionizing radiation, assisting radiologists, and ensuring accurate and thorough clinical documentation. The technologist also supports patient care by obtaining comprehensive clinical histories and participating in community education initiatives as needed.

Operates basic mammography and DEXA equipment to produce quality diagnostic images and administers medical x-rays on patients by:

• Performing mammography examinations on clients, as directed by physicians, using ionizing radiation and correctly adjusting the mammogram equipment (e.g., voltage, amperage/time, and accessories).
• Performing bone density (DEXA) scans according to physician orders, operating DEXA equipment accurately to obtain precise measurements of bone mineral content and density.
• Ensuring that a complete clinical history has been obtained for each patient, appropriately answering the patient's questions and, if necessary, referring them to the appropriate physician or staff.

Assuring that all personal requirements by Mammography Quality Standards Act (MQSA) have been met and assisting in the MQSA compliance of the department by:

• Maintaining personal licenses and assuring that the minimum number of mammograms and CEU's have been met.
• Assisting with all quality control of equipment as assigned by the Coordinator and/or the Director.

Performs other functions to maintain personal competence and contribute to the overall effectiveness of the department by:

• Ensuring compliance with all regulatory and accreditation standards related to mammography, including FDA, MQSA, and ACR requirements.
• Collecting, organizing, and submitting documentation for inspections, credentialing, and accreditation processes.
• Preparing for and supporting successful completion of annual FDA inspections and accreditation surveys.
• Ordering and restocking supplies to ensure mammography and exam rooms are adequately equipped.
• Maintaining a clean, organized, and professional clinical environment.
• Assisting in the development and presentation of educational programs for community outreach.
• Orienting and training new staff, students, and others on mammography practices and procedures.
• Performing additional job-related duties and special projects as assigned.
• Being available to work overtime, alternate shifts, or adjusted schedules as required.
• Maintaining active licensure and ensuring completion of required continuing education (CEUs).
• Adhering to all regulatory agency standards, participating in survey readiness, and maintaining compliance.
• Completing annual employee health requirements within designated timeframes.
• Fulfilling all mandatory education, annual competencies, and department-specific training as scheduled.
• Maintaining current BCLS (CPR) certification and any additional certifications required by the position or department.

ORGANIZATIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES

Associate complies with the following organizational requirements:

• Attends and participates in department meetings and is accountable for all information shared.
• Completes mandatory education, annual competencies and department specific education within established timeframes.
• Completes annual employee health requirements within established timeframes.
• Maintains license/certification, registration in good standing throughout fiscal year.
• Direct patient care providers are required to maintain current BCLS (CPR) and other certifications as required by position/department.
• Consistently utilizes appropriate universal precautions, protective equipment, and ergonomic techniques to protect patient and self.
• Adheres to regulatory agency requirements, survey process and compliance.
• Complies with established organization and department policies.
• Available to work overtime in addition to working additional or other shifts and schedules when required.

Education and Experience

• The knowledge, skills and abilities as indicated below are normally acquired through successful completion of an approved School of Radiology Technology program, with registry by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT). Maintenance of certification in Mammography and three months of on-the-job training is required.

Knowledge & Skills

• Demonstrates expertise in performing mammography and DEXA procedures, including proper technique and equipment operation.
• Accurately obtains high-quality mammographic images, maintains detailed records, corrects inaccuracies, and selects appropriate technique settings, paddle sizes, positioning, and beam alignment.
• Applies analytical skills to assess image quality and ensure compliance with quality assurance standards.
• Maintains a strong interest in scientific and technical principles, applying best practices to minimize patient radiation exposure while achieving optimal image quality.
• Utilizes effective verbal communication skills to educate and engage with patients and present information to community groups.
• Understands and interprets verbal and written instructions using radiologic and medical terminology.
• Demonstrates proficiency in basic computer applications, including data entry, word processing, and spreadsheets.
• Uses the PACS system proficiently, including retrieving and transmitting images, printing, and managing outside cases within PACS and Securview platforms.
• Creates a welcoming, reassuring environment to help patients feel at ease during procedures.
• Maintains professional and respectful interactions with physicians, colleagues, and patients, demonstrating strong interpersonal skills.

Working Conditions

• Works in a radiological environment with possible exposure to radiation.

Physical Demands

• Requires the physical ability and stamina (i.e. to walk/stand for prolonged periods of time, push carts/wheelchairs up to 50 pounds, to position/lift patients at a maximum of 35 pounds unassisted, over 35 pounds requires assistance, provide CPR, etc.) to perform the essential functions of the position. Also requires the manual dexterity to adjust machine controls or change, attach and adjust devices or accessories.
