Temporary Maintenance Worker I with a Work with a large, mission-driven public agency that supports essential water, environmental, and infrastructure services for a major metropolitan region

Duration: 960 Hours in a fiscal year
Work Schedule: Full-Time: 40hr/week

Pay Rate: Maintenance Worker I- $32.43

 
Role Overview
Maintenance Worker I supports Valley Water's Vegetation Field Operations and Stream Maintenance Program (SMP) by performing vegetation management, invasive species control, native habitat maintenance, erosion control, and flood protection-related field maintenance activities. The position works primarily outdoors and supports environmental restoration projects, vegetation control efforts, and Valley Water's sandbag program.
 
Key Responsibilities
  • Assist with vegetation management and field operations under the Stream Maintenance Program (SMP).
  • Remove invasive plant species and maintain native plant mitigation/revegetation sites.
  • Perform pruning, brush clearing, tree maintenance, and vegetation removal for flow capacity and access purposes.
  • Haul vegetative debris across uneven terrain and creek banks.
  • Support erosion control and integrated vegetation management projects.
  • Install, maintain, and repair irrigation systems.
  • Operate vegetation maintenance equipment such as chainsaws, weed eaters, pole saws, mowers, spray equipment, hydroseeders, chippers, and other light equipment.
  • Mix and apply herbicides and calibrate spray equipment.
  • Maintain records, work orders, inspections, surveys, and chemical application documentation.
  • Participate in Valley Water's sandbag program, including filling and delivering sandbags during storm preparedness activities.
  • Follow all safety procedures and support emergency/disaster response activities when required.
 
Required Experience
Required:
  • Minimum 2 years of landscaping experience on commercial, public, or institutional properties for positions assigned to Vegetation Field Operations.
  • Experience using landscape maintenance equipment and vegetation management tools.
  • Experience performing physically demanding outdoor field work.
  • Experience with vegetation maintenance, brush clearing, pruning, and site maintenance.

Preferred:
  • Herbicide application experience.
  • Native plant restoration and revegetation project experience.
  • Invasive species management experience.
  • Irrigation system installation and repair experience.
  • Arboriculture, tree pruning, and erosion control experience.
  • Experience operating light construction and vegetation management equipment.
  • Experience working in regulated Integrated Vegetation Management (IVM) programs.

Education / Certifications
Required:
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid California Driver's License or ability to obtain one.

Preferred
  • Class B Driver's License with tanker and air brake endorsements (or ability to obtain within six months for Maintenance Worker I).
  • Chainsaw certification (or ability to obtain).
  • Qualified Applicator Certificate (QAC) or Qualified Applicator License (QAL) in Categories C & F from the California Department of Pesticide Regulation. Highly preferred and required for advancement within Vegetation Field Operations.
