Position Description
Under direct supervision, performs a variety of unskilled and semi-skilled tasks in the construction, maintenance, monitoring, and repair of city streets, buildings, parks, parkways, landscaped areas, medians, and facilities; and does related work as required.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
This is the part-time, entry/journey level job class. Incumbents assigned to this class initially perform routine and related duties under close supervision. The Maintenance Worker is distinguished from senior-level maintenance employees who perform more complex tasks requiring more specialized knowledge of maintenance procedures and equipment use. The Maintenance Worker performs a greater variety of tasks, works under lesser supervision, and uses more specialized equipment than the Maintenance Helper.

Minimum Qualifications
Education & Experience:
High school diploma or GED equivalent and 6 months recent paid experience performing general construction and/or maintenance work, or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required skills, knowledge and abilities.
License:
Possession of a valid California Class C drivers license and a satisfactory driving record as determined by the City.
Other Requirements:
Wear a uniform and appropriate safety equipment as required by the City, which may include a self-contained breathing apparatus; work outdoors under adverse conditions such as at night, in confined and awkward spaces, in heavy traffic, and in heat, cold, and rain; and attend workshops and classes, as required.
Highly Desirable:
One year of paid full-time equivalent experience performing automotive and motorized equipment servicing and maintenance which required a working knowledge of tools, equipment, materials, and procedures used in the preventive maintenance, adjustment, and minor repair of automotive and other motorized power equipment

Must possess mobility to work in the field; strength, stamina, and mobility to perform medium to heavy physical work, to work in confined spaces and around machines, to climb and descend ladders, to operate varied hand and power tools and construction equipment, and to operate a motor vehicle and visit various City sites; vision to read printed materials and a computer screen; and hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone or radio. The job involves fieldwork requiring frequent walking in operational areas to identify problems or hazards. Finger dexterity is needed to access, enter, and retrieve data using a computer keyboard or calculator and to operate the above-mentioned tools and equipment. Positions in this classification bend, stoop, kneel, reach, and climb to perform work and inspect work sites. Employees must possess the ability to lift, carry, push, and pull materials and objects weighing up to 50
pounds, or heavier weights with the use of proper equipment.
Working Conditions:
The employee constantly works outdoors and is subject to variable weather conditions and traffic, heat, dust, and moisture as well as mechanical and electrical hazards, and applied chemicals. The employee is subject to loud construction noise in particular areas such as power tools, compressors, chippers, and large-scale motorized equipment. The employee may work in vaults and underground storage chambers.
The employee must be available for on-call, stand-by, and emergency call service.
