The purpose of this position is to ensure City parks and public areas are maintained and provide a clean and safe public park environment. This is accomplished by completing maintenance and repairs to City grounds; operating equipment; performing minor equipment repairs; maintaining park and playground equipment; performing landscaping duties; cleaning and maintaining public restrooms; setting up and breaking down equipment for events; and removing graffiti. Other duties include operating City vehicles and responding to emergency maintenance requests.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities

  • Maintains the appearance and safety of grounds, medians, rights-of-way, and other property by mowing, trimming and edging; spraying shrubs and trees with fertilizers, herbicides and insecticides; removing debris; maintaining irrigation systems; and planting grass, flowers, trees and shrubs.
  • Ensures the readiness of athletic fields by leveling and smoothing the surface; painting; striping; prepping for play; completing repairs; and inspecting equipment.
  • Maintains the appearance and safety of playground and picnic areas by removing litter; emptying trash; and inspecting, repairing or replacing worn or damaged equipment.
  • Maintains vehicles by checking fluids; stocking vehicles with equipment, materials, and supplies; logging mileage and related information; and reporting maintenance or repairs.

Qualifications

  • High School diploma or equivalent

Supplemental Information

  • Knowledge of methods, materials and techniques used in the construction and maintenance of parks, roadways, and landscapes
  • Knowledge of standard safety processes, work gear and procedures
  • Skill in the use of hand and power tools
  • Ability to effectively communicate, both verbally and in writing, with co-workers, the public, and elected and appointed officials

Employees can receive a monthly additional pay for Associates, Bachelors, Masters and PHD degrees.

Social Security

Employee participates at 7.65% contribution with matching city funds.

Texas Municipal Retirement System

Employees participate in a statewide retirement program at 7% contribution with a city match of 2:1.

Five years vesting, 20 years retirement at any age.

Vacation

Non-civil service employees accrue 6.67 hours per month (2 weeks per year).

All police employees accrue 10 hours per month (3 weeks per year).

All Fire employees accrue 15 hours per month (7.5 - 24 hour shifts a year).

Sick Leave

Non-civil service employees accrue 10 hours per month (3 weeks per year).

All police employees accrue 10 hours per month (3 weeks per year).

All Fire employees accrue 15 hours per month (7.5 - 24 hour shifts a year).

Holidays

Non-civil service employees receive 13 paid holidays per year including one personal or "floating" day.

Longevity Pay

Earned at a rate of $4 per month.

This is calculated on number of years of service up to and including 25 years (maximum $1200).

Workers compensation coverage is provided for all employees.

Fire/Police

Eligible for Education/Certification pay.

Deferred Compensation Plans- Mass Mutual/Empower

Payroll deduction for employee participation. City does not contribute.
