THE POSITION

To perform a variety of semi-skilled and skilled tasks in the construction, maintenance and repair of the City''s streets and storm drainage systems, water distribution and sewage collection facilities. Positions allocated to this class are expected to perform the most skilled and complex maintenance, construction and repair work. The purpose of this recruitment is to fill a current vacancy in the Streets Division of the Public Works Department, as well as establish an eligibility list for future vacancies.

IDEAL CANDIDATE

The Ideal Candidate will have extensive experience with equipment, materials and methods utilized in the repair and construction of asphalt and concrete structures (sidewalks, driveways, roads, curbs and gutters). The Ideal Candidate will be able to plan projects, order materials, direct, mentor, and train staff, understand city specifications, make sound decisions and work independently, with a demonstrated history of successful leadership and customer service skills. Excellent communication, time management, and organizational skills are a must, as well as the ability to contribute to a positive team environment.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Operate a variety of moderately heavy and heavy construction and maintenance equipment including such pieces as a backhoe, dozer, loader, grader, roller, crane, three-axle truck and truck with trailer; use concrete cutting equipment; operate a jackhammer; pour and finish concrete; construct concrete forms and perform rough carpentry work; use hot asphalt and oils. Perform a variety of construction and maintenance operations requiring a high level of skill and expertise involving streets, storm drainpipes and channels, sidewalks, curbs, gutters and related facilities. Act as a lead worker for a crew of maintenance workers on assigned projects. Place asphalt in minor patching and repair of streets. Comply with policies and procedures of the Department Illness and Injury Prevention Program. Utilize proper safety precautions and set a positive example for others. Regular and consistent attendance.

OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS

Provide general information to the public, other city departments, and vendors pertaining to area of assignment. Perform preventive maintenance and minor repairs on assigned equipment. Meet stand-by program requirements and serve in a stand-by status after regular working hours and respond to emergency call-outs. Assist in the preparation of cost estimates, scheduling of work, and employee evaluations. Install and remove traffic cones and barricades as necessary. Requisition of materials and supplies for assigned facilities and projects. Instruct subordinates in proper work techniques, use of equipment and safety practices and requirements. Work cooperatively with others. Drive vehicles and equipment as required. Perform related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

High School Diploma or equivalent. Specialized coursework in construction or related field is desired.

Experience:

Three (3) years of experience performing duties comparable to those of Maintenance Worker II.

Two (2) years of supervisory experience is highly desirable.

License and Certificate:

Possession of valid Class B California Driver''s License with Tank and Air Brake Endorsements and DMV Medical required upon hire. Possession of a valid Class A California driver's license with Tank and Air Brake Endorsement, Forklift Certification, First Aid and CPR certifications, Railroad Worker Safety certification, and a Work Zone Safety certificate from the International Municipal Signal Association is required prior to permanent appointment.

Current Salary:

$5,146.01 - $6,567.76 /month ($2,375.08 - $3,031.27 /bi-weekly)

Retirement:

CalPERS Retirement System (2 % @ 60 formula for Classic CalPERS members and 2% @ 62 formula for new CalPERS members). The City does not participate in social security

Deferred Comp:

Choice of deferred compensation plans (Traditional and Roth) with 1% City-match. After successful completion of probation, new hires are also eligible for a 2% City contribution.

Medical:

CalPERS Medical Insurance Plans, including HMOs and PPOs. City gives an allowance toward the cost of insurance. Maximum Family Medical Allowance (2026): 2,463.99/month and for 2027 is $2,537.91/month.

Dental/Vision:

City paid Delta Dental and VSP Vision Benefits

LTD/STD:

City paid wage protection for long/short term disabilities

Life Insurance:

City provides $50,000 life insurance policy
