Description
CITY OF NORFOLK: Department of Public Works is currently seeking Maintenance Worker II within the Division of Environmental Storm Water Management. This is an operational position that supports the maintenance of ditches, drains, and retention ponds, the installation, repair, and maintenance of stormwater infrastructure, and the sweeping of city streets. This position also supports the lot cleaning crew that cleans dead ends and underpasses, removes illegal dumping from City vacant lots, and assists with responding to cleanup functions around the City
The Department of Public Works builds, maintains, and operates the physical facilities that support and enhance the lives of Norfolk's citizens, businesses and visitors, including the City's Street Network, Traffic Management System, Storm Water System, Waste Management, and Recycling.
The Division of Environmental Storm Water Management is tasked with reducing the threat of flooding and improving the water quality within the City of Norfolk. Our crews maintain the City's stormwater infrastructure, consisting of underground pipes, structures, roadside and offroad ditches, BMPs, and pump stations to minimize the impact of rain and tidal flooding.
Departmental Hiring Salary Range: $43,264 (with an additional $5,000 CDL Stipend once acquired)

Education/Experience
Work requires the ability to read and understand written instructions, to understand simple processes and the routine operation of machines. Level of knowledge equivalent to high school or equivalency.
One year as a Maintenance Worker, or successful completion of the Operations Apprentice program.
Additional Information & Requirements
Must possess a valid Driver's License.
CDL Driver's License is preferred.
Tanker endorsement is preferred.
Pesticide Applicator a plus.
A CDL is required within six (6) months of appointment. Must provide a copy of the Division of Motor Vehicle driving record (obtained within last 30 days) during the interview.
Work Hours: Monday - Friday from 6:30 am to 3:00 pm; 40 hours per week every week; This position may require the candidate to work a mandatory rotating on-call schedule and respond to after-hour emergencies.
Regular full-time and permanent part-time employees may receive paid holidays, vacation and sick leave, employer paid pension plan, basic life insurance, voluntary participation in medical and dental, Section 457 deferred compensation, long-term disability, optional life insurance for self, spouse and children, medical and dependent care reimbursement plans, access to membership in credit union and employer provided parking.
Special project/grant employees are generally eligible for the same benefits of regular full-time employees; however, retirement, life insurance and participation in health plans vary depending upon funding and authorization.
Temporary/seasonal and part-time employees are generally only eligible for employer provided parking and access to membership in credit union.
Retirement
If you are hired October 5, 2010, or after to a position with City of Norfolk Retirement System benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit. This will be a pre-tax payroll deduction.
If you are hired January 1, 2022, or after to a position with Virginia Retirement System (VRS) benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit. This will be a pre-tax payroll deduction.
