Role Overview
Maintenance Worker I is an entry-level field maintenance position responsible for performing maintenance, repair, construction, and operational support work for flood protection systems, raw water distribution facilities, dams, waterways, recharge facilities, pipelines, roads, and other Valley Water properties. The role works under close supervision while learning the full scope of maintenance and construction activities. The temporary assignment is expected to support the Watershed Field Operations Water Utility team, primarily working at dams, recharge facilities, and pipelines.
Key Responsibilities
Construct, maintain, and repair flood protection and raw water facilities.
Perform concrete work including form setting, reinforcement installation, mixing, pouring, and finishing concrete.
Remove debris, graffiti, hazardous materials, and encampment-generated waste from facilities and waterways.
Support sediment loading operations and groundwater recharge pond cleaning activities.
Assist with maintenance of dams, waterways, roads, pumps, valves, and related infrastructure.
Perform vegetation clearing, brush removal, pruning, and tree removal activities.
Operate hand tools, power tools, and light equipment safely.
Conduct traffic control activities, including setting up warning devices and barricades.
Inspect equipment and perform minor preventive maintenance and repairs.
Maintain electronic records and complete work documentation.
Respond to public inquiries and customer concerns professionally.
Perform earthwork activities such as excavation, grading, and fill placement.
Required Experience
Minimum 2 years of construction or field maintenance experience.
Ability to perform physically demanding, labor-intensive outdoor work in varying weather conditions.
Basic apprentice-level construction knowledge related to maintenance of water distribution facilities
Preferred:
Candidates with experience in the following areas would be highly relevant:
Maintenance of water distribution systems, dams, pipelines, or flood protection infrastructure.
Concrete construction and repair work.
Operation of light construction and maintenance equipment.
Traffic control and job-site safety procedures.
Mechanical, electrical, carpentry, welding, or painting support activities.
Experience working in outdoor utility, public works, water utility, or construction environments.
