Maintenance Worker I/II - Streets

The City of Concord is currently seeking to fill one Maintenance Worker vacancy in the Public Works Department. This recruitment is to fill current and future vacancies in the Streets Division.

The Maintenance Worker I and Maintenance Worker II classifications are part of a Flexibly Staffed Classification Series. Initial placement in either classification will be dependent upon qualifications.

What you will be doing:

Streets Maintenance Workers participate in the maintenance and repair of the Citys streets, curbs, gutters, sidewalks, storm drains, creeks, drainage channels, signs and markings, depending on assignment, to make Concord a city of the highest quality.

We are looking for someone who:

  • Has knowledge of and experience in streets maintenance and paving-related work.
  • Has experience performing traffic control, including the establishment of safe work zones.
  • Is dependable and takes pride in their work.
  • Can perform physical labor for sustained periods.
  • Can lift and carry heavy objects.
  • Provides excellent customer service.
  • Is able to utilize safe work practices and procedures.
  • Can follow oral and written instructions.
  • Can work outdoors in variable weather conditions and work in environments dealing with hazardous and unpleasant materials.

SELECTION PROCESS

Examples of duties include, but are not limited to

Street Maintenance

  • Repairs street surfaces by cutting or removing loose materials, hand sweeping, and spraying tack coats; and dumping, spreading, shoveling, raking, tamping, and rolling asphalt for street patching and resurfacing.
  • Breaks up and removes concrete; lays out and builds sidewalk, curb and gutter forms; mixes, places and tamps concrete; levels, smooths, and shapes concrete surface; finishes concrete surface texture to specified grade and contour.
  • Clears and rods debris and weeds from street rights-of-way and storm drainage facilities; repairs, replaces, or installs culverts, drainpipe, surface drainage channels, and catch basins.

For Most Positions

  • Operates, services, cleans and cares for tools and equipment used on the job.
  • Responds to emergency or complaint calls regarding sewer, drainage, road conditions, building security, or hazardous or other spills, traffic signals, or conditions at parks or landscaped areas. Ensures that appropriate parties are notified.
  • Follows safe work practices and observes safety precautions, including shoring techniques; and sets up traffic cones and barricades to channel traffic.
  • Performs a variety of physical labor as assigned.
  • Reads and interprets maps and basic blueprints.
  • Maintains records including initiating and completing work orders, and makes oral reports of work performed.
  • Orders and picks up material following standard procedures.
  • For relief or training purposes, may be assigned maintenance activities of personnel in higher-level classifications.
  • May provide orientation to new employees in the work unit.
  • Promotes the Citys Mission to make Concord a city of the highest quality by providing responsive, cost-effective, and innovative government services; understands and subscribes to the Vision and Values Statement adopted by the City.
  • Performs other work as assigned.

Qualifications

Knowledge and Abilities

Working knowledge of the methods, tools, equipment, materials, and practices used in the construction and maintenance of streets, sidewalks, sewers, traffic signs and markings, traffic signals, or municipal facilities; of the potential hazards and necessary safety precautions associated with the work. Ability to perform physical work requiring coordination, agility, strength, and stamina; to obtain appropriate certificates or licenses required to operate and service equipment; to operate a variety of hand and portable power tools, vehicles, and mobile construction and maintenance equipment skillfully and safely; to work independently under general supervision; to follow oral and written instructions; to read and interpret maps, diagrams, and equipment operations manuals; to maintain records; to make basic arithmetical calculations; and to establish and maintain cooperative and effective relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

Maintenance Worker I

Education: Satisfactory completion of high school or the equivalent.

Experience: One year of experience in field construction or maintenance work. Related vocational training in construction technology may substitute for six months of experience.

Maintenance Worker II

Education: Satisfactory completion of high school or the equivalent, preferably supplemented by vocational training in construction technology or related field.

Experience: Three years of employment in field construction and related maintenance work.

Other

For Maintenance Worker I, a Class C Drivers License and a satisfactory driving record are conditions of initial and continued employment. Selected positions require that incumbents obtain a Class B California Drivers License within the six-month probationary period.

For Maintenance Worker II, a Class B California Drivers License and a satisfactory driving record are conditions of initial and continued employment. Possession of a Class A drivers license is desirable.
