Help

  • Maintains and repairs installed electrical systems such as lighting fixtures and wiring, power fixtures and wiring, power sources, alarm systems, and/or services battery packs for emergency power systems.
  • Following specific information, locates and makes repairs to plumbing that can be accomplished by removing, cleaning, replacing, packing, and sealing defective parts of utility, supply, and disposal systems, such, as dirty traps, sections of broken tile or pipe, and leaky drains using existing routes, openings, hangers, and levels.
  • Performs minor construction and repair on existing structures involving standard measurements, specifications, instructions, and basic shop mathematics.
  • Performs routine preventive maintenance on heating systems and refrigeration and air conditioning units.
  • Utilizes safety practices and procedures following established safety rules and regulations and maintains a safe and clean work environment.
  • Uses and maintains a wide variety of hand and power tools associated with the carpentry, electrical, HVAC, and plumbing trades.

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the quality level of experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards Handbook X-118C.

QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standard Handbook X-118C for the WG-4700 General Maintenance and Operations work family located here. Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most blue-collar positions, you must meet any screen-out element listed and show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time.

The screen out element for this position is Ability To Do The Work Of The Position Without More Than Normal Supervision.

Ideal Candidate: Our ideal candidate is someone with integrity who takes pride in their work, also is a TEAM player, works great with other members! Good physical stamina and strength to stand, bend, lift, and carry heavy and bulky items. Excellent time management and organizational skills to prioritize tasks and meet project deadlines. Knowledge of safety procedures, including proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE).

PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.

VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Physical Effort: Uses hand and power tools and equipment that may require standing and holding tools in uncomfortable positions for extended periods. The work requires considerable bending, kneeling, climbing, and stooping. On site work requires strenuous physical exertion when handling heavy and bulky materials. Work typically requires bending, stooping, crawling, and climbing on ladders, scaffolding, platforms, and rooftops. Frequently lifts and carries material and equipment that weigh up to 40 pounds, unassisted, and occasionally lifts or moves heavier items with the assistance of lifting devices or other workers.

Working Conditions: The work is done inside and outside, and is usually dirty, dusty, or greasy. May work in confined areas, such as crawl spaces and attics. May be exposed to moderate or high noise levels from operating machinery, sawdust in the air, glue, fumes, and hazards associated with woodworking and related power equipment including hazards of working on and around scaffolds and ladders. The employee is sometimes required to make repairs and installations outside in all types of weather. The employee is frequently exposed to the possibility of cuts, bruises, scrapes, contusions, burns, electric shock, and infections. May occasionally be exposed to the possibility of broken bones. Protective equipment and clothing, such as safety shoes, earplugs, safety glasses or sun glasses, gloves, rain gear, hard hats, coveralls, respirators and other protective gear are required, which are sometimes heavy and uncomfortable.
