Maintenance Worker 1 - Gardens

The Maintenance Worker in the Gardens Department performs entry-level gardening and grounds maintenance tasks associated with the care and upkeep of cemetery grounds. Under supervision, the Maintenance Worker regularly works independently, with an associate, or as part of a team. The position may also assist other departments as needed to complete related tasks as directed. The Maintenance Worker operates a variety of light trucks and utility vehicles, motorized gardening equipment, and hand tools. The position is expected to provide caring and compassionate service to visitors and guests at all times.

What You'll Be Doing

• Remove litter and debris from cemetery grounds.
• Assist visitors, guests, and/or property owners with directions and provide other assistance as needed, including completing requested interment space maintenance.
• Immediately report any safety hazards encountered.
• Report facility repairs or maintenance needs identified during the course of the day to the department supervisor.
• Review the Maintenance Interment Report regularly to determine whether any funeral services are scheduled in the assigned area.
• Review the Service Sheet each morning for funeral services scheduled in the assigned area.
• Demonstrate respect for visitors, guests, team members, and all other employees at all times.
• Demonstrate complete integrity in all aspects of the position.
• Mow, edge, and trim lawns.
• Trim grass around memorial tablets and lawn vases.
• Trim hedges, espaliers, shrubs, and ground covers.
• Prepare and plant landscape plants and trees and install sod.
• Prune small trees.
• Apply chemicals, including fertilizers, wetting agents, and herbicides.
• Assist with setup and cleanup before and after special events.
• Set up and secure canopies for funeral services and special events.
• Minimum of 6 months of experience in a maintenance position.
• Valid California Driver's License.
• Ability to lift up to 100 lbs.
• Must have a caring and professional demeanor and enjoy helping families at a difficult time.
• Must be able to work weekends and holidays.
• High school diploma/GED certification.
• Must be able to work on-site.

Drug Testing Policy

Prior to beginning employment, all job applicants who receive a job offer will be required to voluntarily submit to a drug screening test conducted by a laboratory designated by Forest Lawn. The drug screening method is a hair collection test that will detect the use of illegal drugs within the past 90 days. A positive drug test may result in the withdrawal of the job offer.
