Position Summary
A large food‑processing facility is seeking a 2nd Shift Maintenance Supervisor to lead preventive and corrective maintenance activities across a high‑volume production environment. This role oversees maintenance personnel, ensures safe and efficient equipment operation, and supports production goals through effective planning, troubleshooting, and leadership. The supervisor is responsible for minimizing downtime, maintaining regulatory compliance, and ensuring maintenance tasks are executed to quality and safety standards.
Key Responsibilities
Leadership & Team Oversight
- Direct daily activities of maintenance technicians in alignment with established procedures and operational priorities.
- Coach team members on safety, quality expectations, productivity, and cost‑control initiatives.
- Conduct annual performance reviews and assist in identifying training or skill‑development needs.
- Lead pre‑shift meetings to assign work, provide clarity on tasks, and reinforce daily safety expectations.
Safety & Compliance
- Enforce compliance with PPE standards, Lockout/Tagout, GMP/SQF guidelines, and all plant safety requirements.
- Address safety violations promptly and ensure technicians maintain required tools and equipment.
- Maintain adherence to USDA, HACCP, and internal sanitation/quality requirements when present in production areas.
Maintenance Execution & Planning
- Assign, review, and verify preventive maintenance work orders to ensure accuracy and completion.
- Audit preventive maintenance tasks weekly to confirm thoroughness and determine any additional training needs.
- Manage work lists, verify parts availability, and coordinate schedules—including weekend or overtime coverage.
- Respond promptly to breakdown calls within assigned zones and support troubleshooting and repair efforts.
- Complete daily root‑cause analyses and downtime documentation, submitting required updates to system tracking tools.
Cross‑Functional Support
- Communicate effectively with production, maintenance leadership, and other departments to ensure alignment on task priorities.
- Provide updates regarding carryover tasks and upcoming weekend work to department leadership.
Continuous Improvement
- Identify opportunities to enhance reliability, reduce downtime, and improve maintenance processes.
- Support the implementation of operational improvements that enhance safety, efficiency, and equipment performance.
Other Duties
- Perform additional tasks or responsibilities as assigned to support overall plant operations.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Minimum 2+ years of supervisory experience in a manufacturing or processing environment, overseeing teams of 10 or more.
- At least 5 years of hands‑on maintenance experience, including equipment repair and troubleshooting in a manufacturing environment.
- Familiarity with USDA, HACCP, and food‑industry sanitation practices is strongly preferred.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Outlook, Excel, Word).
- Strong multitasking ability in a fast‑paced, high‑pressure environment.
- Comfortable working around raw protein products.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to work in environments that may be hot, cold, wet, humid, or odorous.
- Flexibility with overtime, weekend work, and shift changes as required.
- Strong computer literacy and ability to produce clear, concise reports.
- Safety‑focused, people‑oriented leadership style with strong motivation skills.
- Strong analytical, problem‑solving, and decision‑making skills.
- Commitment to attending training or certification courses when required.
- Must be available for weekend and on‑call rotation coverage.
Work Environment
The role requires frequent exposure to manufacturing conditions such as:
- Moving mechanical equipment, vibration, and noisy areas requiring hearing protection
- Temperature fluctuations, including hot, cold, wet, or humid conditions
- Dust, airborne particles, and varying environmental elements, including occasional outdoor exposure
Physical Requirements
To perform the role successfully, candidates must be able to:
- Stand and walk for extended periods on production floors
- Lift, push, pull, and carry materials or equipment
- Work in physically demanding settings requiring stamina and full‑body coordination
- Demonstrate strong manual dexterity and safe movement in fast‑paced or confined environments
- Occasionally lift items weighing up to 90 lbs
