DEFINITION:

Under the direction of the Public Works Superintendent, will lead, oversee, review, and perform work activities and duties assigned to the parks and streets maintenance crews; assume responsibility for the more difficult and complex tasks; and perform other related tasks as necessary.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:

The Maintenance Crew Leader is the advanced journey level class within the maintenance series with responsibility for leading and overseeing the work of crews responsible for park and street maintenance.

Note: Incumbents in this classification are subject to the Alcohol/Drug Testing requirements of the Department of Transportation.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED:

Exercises technical and functional supervision over lower level staff.

Essential Functions

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

• Lead, oversee, review, and perform the work of staff responsible for parks and streets maintenance including irrigation system maintenance, tree and brush maintenance, general landscape maintenance of City parks and rights-of-way, shooting and establishing grades to ensure correct drainage; determining the correct amount of materials and labor needed; checking for and ensuring the protection of gas, electric, water and communication lines before proceeding; assisting in bid preparations; and preparing sketches and plans for proposed project
• Supervise the operation and maintenance of parks and streets maintenance equipment and/or machinery including light and heavy equipment.
• Assist in the training of lower level personnel in the areas of work; ensure adherence to safe work methods, procedures and practices; identify training opportunities and needs; make recommendations to higher level staff.
• Coordinate assigned work activities with other work crews within the City and with outside organizations.
• Evaluate work sites and determine equipment, material, and personnel needs for the task at hand; obtain necessary equipment and tools; coordinate and schedule the utilization of maintenance personnel.
• Perform routine field checks to ensure work accuracy and proper and safe work methods by members of the maintenance crew; enforce compliance with proper work methods and safety regulations.
• Maintain accurate records for work in progress, completed, and planned.
• Maintain an adequate inventory of commonly used materials by maintenance crews; initiate purchase requisitions to acquire necessary materials and equipment.
• Read and interpret blue prints, schematics, drawings, sketches, and other documents.
• Place road barricades and cones to set up a safe work area for work crews; perform traffic control duties as necessary.
• Respond to questions and concerns from the general public; provide information as is appropriate and resolve service complaints.
• Performs other related duties as required.
• Assists in the development and implementation of goals, annual work plans, policies and procedures for assigned City facilities and services.
• Participates in the selection, training, coordination and supervision of staff and volunteers.
• May assist with the development and administration of Division budget.
• Maintain prompt and regular attendance.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education and/or Experience:

Any combination of education and experience that has provided the knowledge, abilities, and skills necessary for a Maintenance Crew Leader. A typical way of obtaining the required qualifications is to possess at least three years of experience performing parks or street maintenance. A high school diploma or equivalent is required.

License/Certificate:

Possession of a valid class "A" California drivers license with tanker endorsement.

Positions designated in the Teamsters Local 1932 General Employees Unit receive the following benefits:

• Cafeteria Amount for the purchase of medical, dental and vision insurance is $1,625.00/mo effective August, 2024.
• Employees hired on or after May 1, 2018, shall have a maximum cap of $500 for cash in-lieu.
• Up to 80 hours per year of vacation accrued for 0 - 5 years of service
• Up to 96 hours of sick leave (8 hours accrued monthly)
• 12 paid holidays (per calendar year)
• 20 floating holiday hours (per fiscal year)
• California Public Employees Retirement System (CalPERS) for Miscellaneous Members:

Classic Members hired prior to 6/1/2012 benefit level is 2.7% @ 55

Classic Members hired after 6/1/2012 benefit level is 2.5% @ 55
