Mainframe Network Engineer (z/OS Communications Server)
Location: Remote (Florida preferred)
Type: Contract, through May 2027 (40 hrs/week)

About the Role
A large healthcare organization is seeking a Senior Mainframe Network Engineer to design, implement, and maintain the network and communications stack that keeps its z/OS environment secure, reliable, and highly available. You will own VTAM, TCP/IP, routing, and secure file transfer configuration on IBM z16 hardware, serve as a technical resource for other engineers, and drive automation and process improvements. This role includes on-call support as needed.

What You'll Do

• Install, configure, maintain, and troubleshoot IBM z/OS Communications Server, SNA/VTAM, and TCP/IP on z/OS 3.2 running on IBM z16
• Update and maintain VTAM, OMPROUTE (OSPF) routing, Enterprise Extender connections, and OSA adapter configurations
• Administer secure communications including AT-TLS, IPsec, Policy Agent, SSH, FTPS, TN3270, and CSSMTP
• Support Connect:Direct (NDM), CA TPX, and network monitoring tools to ensure stable mainframe connectivity
• Resolve alerts, escalated tickets, and complex errors, and determine impacts of migrations and upgrades
• Write JCL and REXX to automate tasks and improve operational efficiency
• Participate in disaster recovery planning and exercises and provide input into infrastructure architecture

Required Qualifications

• 5+ years of z/OS systems engineering experience with a focus on mainframe networking
• Hands-on experience with IBM z/OS Communications Server, SNA/VTAM, and TCP/IP
• Experience with APPN networks and class of service, Enterprise Extender, and OMPROUTE (OSPF)
• Experience with AT-TLS, IPsec, IP security, QoS, Policy Agent, and ICSF
• Working knowledge of Sysplex, subplexing, HiperSockets, OSA-ICC, JES2, SDSF, SMP/E, and Unix System Services (USS)
• Experience with IBM Connect:Direct (NDM) and CA TPX
• System programming skills with JCL and REXX
• Bachelor's degree in an IT related field, or equivalent relevant work experience
• Ability to participate in on-call support

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with z/OS 3.x on IBM z16
• Experience with Connect:Direct v6.2 and ZEN Network Monitor
• Experience working in an Agile environment
• Experience leading initiatives and mentoring other systems engineers
