Job Summary

The Mainframe Developer is responsible for designing, developing, testing, implementing, and supporting enterprise mainframe applications and technologies. This role serves as a mainframe Subject Matter Expert (SME), providing technical leadership across application development, architecture, infrastructure planning, technology roadmaps, and operational support. The developer works within an Agile environment and partners with engineering, operations, vendors, and business teams to deliver reliable, secure, and maintainable solutions.

Key Responsibilities

• Design, develop, test, implement, and support mainframe applications and technology solutions.

• Serve as a technical SME for mainframe development, languages, tools, and related technologies.

• Develop and enhance applications using COBOL, CICS, SAS, MQ, TSO, and other mainframe technologies.

• Drive solution architecture across applications, services, and integration points.

• Participate in Agile ceremonies and contribute throughout the full software development lifecycle.

• Establish and maintain mainframe technology roadmaps, development standards, and best practices.

• Develop solutions that meet established code quality, performance, security, and operational standards.

• Apply test-driven development and create maintainable, supportable, and testable code.

• Analyze system capacity and performance and support infrastructure planning and optimization.

• Lead or support mainframe application migrations, modernization initiatives, and cross-functional technology projects.

• Evaluate technical solutions, including vendor proposals and build-versus-buy decisions, and coordinate implementation activities.

• Automate processes and identify opportunities to improve operational efficiency and system reliability.

• Create and maintain technical, operational, and compliance documentation.

• Mentor developers, conduct code reviews, and contribute to communities of practice.

• Partner with operations and engineering teams to resolve production issues and improve service delivery.

• Maintain awareness of emerging mainframe technologies, development practices, and industry trends.

• Follow established risk management, security, compliance, and change management policies and procedures.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related field, or equivalent experience.

• 20+ years of overall technology experience with extensive mainframe development experience.

• 10+ years of experience with the AmTrust accounting system.

• Strong knowledge of TSO and mainframe operating systems and technology.

• Hands-on experience with COBOL, CICS, SAS, and MQ.

• Strong understanding of functional software design and software development best practices.

• Experience with Git and GitHub.

• Knowledge of software development methodologies, including Agile.

• Experience designing and implementing enterprise technology solutions.

• Strong problem-solving, collaboration, and communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience in Wealth and Asset Management or financial services.

• Experience serving as a mainframe technical SME or architect.

• Experience with mainframe modernization, application migration, or technology transformation initiatives.

• Experience mentoring developers and establishing development standards and best practices.
