    Job Duties

    The Office of the Executive Secretary of the Supreme Court of Virginia is seeking applicants for the position of Magistrate Advisor with the Department of Magistrate Services. The magistrate advisor will provide legal assistance, services, education, advice and direction to the Virginia Magistrate System.

    Essential Duties & Responsibilities

    The successful candidate will be responsible for providing substantive and procedural legal guidance and education in criminal and civil law to members of the Magistrate System.

    Specific duties include the following:

    • Conduct case law and legislation review.
    • Research legal issues and provide guidance.
    • Develop and edit procedural and legal manuals relevant to magistrate duties.
    • Develop and teach magistrate certification courses.
    • Develop and present other onsite, virtual presence, and online continuing education.
    • Work within the Department of Magistrate Services for delivery of services to magistrates.
    • Provide legal guidance for the proper and timely updating of the eMagistrate system and the Uniform Statute Table (UST).
    • Conduct visits to magistrate offices for auditing purposes.
    • Handle other tasks as assigned.

    Minimum Qualifications

    The most competitive candidates will possess:

    • Juris Doctor degree from an ABA-accredited school of law.
    • Extensive knowledge of Virginia criminal law and criminal procedure.
    • Excellent analytical, decision-making, and communication skills (written and verbal).
    • Excellent writing, proofreading, and editing skills.
    • Excellent public speaking skills.
    • Strong interpersonal skills.
    • Computer proficiency.
