    JOB SUMMARY

    Under general supervision, plans, directs, and evaluates total nursing care and functions in OR on a particular shift, in accordance with established patient care plan and philosophy. Will provide care and support to patients before, during and after surgery; will assist the surgeon and the surgical team in their tasks.

    Reporting Structure: Reports to the Surgery Nursing Director and/or designee

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

    Education

    Graduate of an accredited program in nursing.

    Work Experience

    A minimum of two years nurse experience in an acute healthcare setting preferred. OR nurse experience preferred.

    6 months of hospital or nursing home experience is required for IV certification

    License/Certification

    Current Tennessee State Licensed Practical Nurse with no restrictions

    Current CPR/Current Basic Life Support (BLS) or obtain within 30 days of hire date

    Current Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) required for fulltime employees or within 1 year of hire date

    Current Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) required for fulltime employees or within 1 year of hire date

    IV certification

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

    Operating Room Patient Care

    Provides for accurate care and handling of specimens.

    Observes and enforces strict standards of asepsis in creating and maintaining the sterile field. Observes, checks and monitors all equipment used during surgery to confirm they are running smoothly.

    Documents in patient EHR accurately.

    Inventories all items both pre- and post-surgery.

    May perform Scrub Nurse duties: Selects and handles instruments and supplies used for the operation, passing them to surgeon.

    Facilitates patient care by assisting the surgeon before, during and after surgical procedures.

    Plans, set up, performs and cleans up the assigned surgical procedures.

    Performs sharp, sponge and instrument counts according to policy

    Call is required

    Patient Care

    Provides direct and individualized nursing care to patients based on the application of scientific nursing principles.

    Contributes to admission assessment and patient history.

    Monitors patient condition throughout shift according to unit care standards, including the reassessment of pain.

    Incorporates in the nursing plan of care: nursing interventions specific to the patient's age and identified needs; measurable patient outcomes, discharge planning.

    Administers medications, including I.V. fluids, according to policy and procedure.

    Administers and accounts for all controlled substances according to established policy and procedure.

    Documents nursing interventions and patient response to care.

    Provides basic teaching as outlined in the plan of care and documents teaching and outcomes in the medical record.

    Evaluates patient outcomes and reports to RN or MD.

    Reports changes in the patient's condition and/or adverse patient response to physician and other health care professionals.

    Maintains acceptable standards of patient care.

    Arranges to have needed supplies and equipment on hand.

    Participates in ongoing quality improvement activities.

    OTHER DUTIES

    May assist with other related duties and special project work as required.

    PHYSICAL DEMANDS

    Requires prolonged periods of standing and walking.

    Must be able to lift, push, and pull up to 40 pounds during a scheduled work shift.

    Must be able to see with corrective eye wear.

    Must be able to hear clearly with assistance.

    May be exposed to infectious and contagious diseases.

    Must be able to handle emergency and/or crisis situations.

    May be required to wear protective equipment as necessary.

    Requires ability to transfer and reposition patients.

    Requires reaching, stooping, bending, kneeling, and crouching for patient care functions.

    Possess the ability to perform effectively in a stressful and fast-paced environment.

    Ability to pass all required health and other screening tests including random and reasonable suspicion drug screens.
