Definition of Position: 

The Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) provides direct patient care to postpartum mothers and newborns under the direction of a Registered Nurse (RN), physician, certified nurse midwife, or other licensed independent practitioner in accordance with the Oregon State Board of Nursing Nurse Practice Act.

The LPN delivers safe, compassionate, family-centered nursing care to postpartum patients and newborns while assisting with patient education, medication administration, monitoring, documentation, and coordination of care within the LPN scope of practice.

Following successful completion of facility-approved education, competency validation, and ongoing competency assessment, the LPN also functions as a Surgical Scrub Technician during cesarean deliveries and other obstetrical surgical procedures. The LPN is responsible for maintaining sterile technique, preparing surgical instrumentation, assisting the surgical team, and performing surgical counts in collaboration with the circulating Registered Nurse.

The LPN practices within Oregon licensure requirements and performs only those duties authorized by state law, hospital policy, demonstrated competency, and provider delegation.

Responsibilities:

Essential Job Functions:

Postpartum Nursing Responsibilities

• Provide direct nursing care to postpartum patients under RN supervision.
• Obtain and document maternal vital signs and focused nursing observations.
• Monitor and report changes in patient condition promptly.
• Perform postpartum assessments within the LPN scope, including:
  • Fundal assessment
  • Lochia assessment
  • Incision assessment
  • Pain assessment
  • Urinary output
  • Edema
• Administer medications and treatments as ordered and permitted by Oregon law and facility policy.
• Assist patients with ambulation, hygiene, comfort measures, and activities of daily living.
• Reinforce education regarding postpartum recovery, breastfeeding, bottle feeding, newborn care, safe sleep practices, and discharge instructions.
• Maintain accurate electronic medical record documentation.
• Assist during postpartum emergencies and obstetrical events.

Newborn Nursery Responsibilities

• Assist with routine newborn care under supervision of RN.
• Obtain newborn vital signs, weights, measurements, and assessments within scope.
• Assist with infant feeding and parent education.
• Perform newborn bathing and routine care.
• Complete newborn screenings as delegated and competency validated, including blood glucose monitoring, bilirubin screening, congenital heart screening, and specimen collection.
• Observe newborn transition and promptly report abnormal findings.
• Promote infant security and safe sleep practices.
• Assist with neonatal stabilization until advanced personnel arrive.

Surgical Technician Responsibilities

Upon successful completion of facility competency validation, duties include:

• Prepare the operating room and sterile field.
• Verify availability and sterility of instruments, supplies, and equipment.
• Perform surgical scrub, gowning, and gloving according to sterile technique.
• Arrange instruments and supplies for cesarean deliveries and obstetrical surgical procedures.
• Pass instruments, sutures, sponges, and supplies to the surgeon.
• Anticipate surgeon needs during procedures.
• Maintain sterile technique throughout surgery.
• Perform instrument, sponge, and sharps counts with the circulating RN according to policy.
• Report count discrepancies immediately.
• Handle surgical specimens according to hospital policy.
• Assist with operating room turnover and preparation for subsequent procedures.
• Participate in emergency cesarean deliveries.
• Keep OR suite stocked.
• Perform additional duties as assigned within licensure and demonstrate competency.

General Responsibilities

• Maintain patient confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA regulations.
• Demonstrate professional communication with patients, families, physicians, nurses, and interdisciplinary staff.
• Participate in quality improvement activities.
• Maintain required certifications and annual competencies.
• Take assignment based on competency and departmental needs.
• Perform additional duties as assigned within licensure and demonstrate competency.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Qualifications:

Education:

Required: Graduate of an accredited Licensed Practical Nursing program. Successful completion of facility-approved Surgical Technician training and competency validation within 3 months of hire.

 

Licenses/ certifications/ registrations

Require: Current Oregon Licensed Practical Nurse. Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification. Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification within 6 months of employment.

Preferred: Certifications specific to areas of clinical specialty preferred.

 

Experience:

Required: One year of postpartum, nursery, medical-surgical, surgical, or obstetrical nursing experience preferred.

Preferred: Previous surgical scrub experience preferred but not required. Experience with electronic health records preferred.

Physical Requirements:

Ability to stand and walk for prolonged periods. Frequent bending, stooping, reaching, pushing, pulling, and lifting up to 50 pounds with assistance when appropriate. Manual dexterity sufficient to safely handle surgical instruments and medical equipment. Ability to wear personal protective equipment and surgical attire for extended periods. Ability to respond rapidly during obstetrical and neonatal emergencies. Visual and auditory ability necessary to safely assess patients and monitor equipment.

 

Working Conditions:

Hospital environment with frequent exposure to blood, body fluids, infectious diseases, and hazardous materials. Exposure to stressful and rapidly changing clinical situations. Frequent interaction with patients, families, physicians, and interdisciplinary healthcare professionals. Must maintain strict infection prevention and sterile technique standards while working in both patient care and surgical environments.
