Position Overview The Distribution Instructor (TX Lines) is responsible for delivering and evaluating high-quality classroom and field training for apprentice, journey level, and experienced transmission line workers, as well as other utility personnel as needed. Distribution Instructor III Must have 4 - 7 years of journey-level technical/field experience as a distribution line worker, with a minimum of 4 years transmission line experience.

Position Overview

• The Distribution Instructor (TX Lines) is responsible for delivering and evaluating high-quality classroom and field training for apprentice, journey level, and experienced transmission line workers, as well as other utility personnel as needed. This role ensures participants build technical knowledge, hands-on skills, safety awareness, and professional standards required to construct, maintain, and repair high-voltage transmission lines in alignment with industry standards and best practices.

Key Responsibilities

• Deliver training programs that support  field operations, including construction, maintenance, troubleshooting, work methods, and safety procedures.
• Deliver instruction on industry safety practices, regulatory requirements (OSHA, NESC, etc.), and company policies.
• Practical knowledge of transmission system principles, protective devices, and related equipment.
• Ability to perform basic transmission and distribution line work, including high pressure insulator washing.
• Understanding of stringing, splicing, sagging, insulating, and securing conductors.
• Operate company vehicles.
• Install protective equipment such as blankets and line covers.
• Replace steel members, crossarms, framing components, and similar hardware.
• Perform cutovers between old and new equipment installations.
• Paint structures and conduct minor tree/limb clearing.
• Demonstrate and supervise proper use of tools, equipment, climbing techniques, and rigging procedures in both simulated and live environments.
• Evaluate trainee progress through practical assessments, written tests, and field observations;provide constructive feedback and guidance.
• Maintain accurate training records, develop lesson plans, and update curriculum as industry standards and technologies evolve.
• Promote a safety-first culture and serve as a role model for professionalism, teamwork, and continuous improvement.
• Coordinate with management and other instructors to schedule training sessions and support organizational goals.
• Conduct classroom and hands on instruction related to electrical theory, system operations, equipment use, hazard recognition, and safe work practices.
• Provide mentoring, coaching, and individualized feedback to support employee growth and success.
• Stay informed on new tools, equipment, technologies, and work methods used across service territory.
• Participate in safety initiatives, field observations, and workforce development projects as needed.
• Participate in storm restoration efforts as needed.
• Collaborate with other instructors and operational leaders to ensure consistency and quality across training programs.
• Facilitate field based training, including climbing, tool use, equipment operation, and distribution system construction activities.
• Skilled in installing/removing poles, towers, structures, conductors, insulators, and all other associated line construction material.

Qualifications
Distribution Instructor III

• Must have 4 - 7 years of journey-level technical/field experience as a distribution line worker, with a minimum of 4 years transmission line experience.
• High school diploma or equivalent required;additional technical training or certifications preferred.
• Comprehensive knowledge of electrical transmission and distribution systems, construction standards, and safe work practices.
• Demonstrated ability to climb poles, operate bucket trucks, and work at heights in various weather conditions.
• Strong communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills;ability to engage and motivate adult learners.
• Familiarity with applicable regulatory standards (OSHA, NESC, NFPA 70E) and utility industry best practices.
• Basic proficiency with computers and training software (e.G., PowerPoint and Microsoft Office products) is desirable.
• Physical ability to demonstrate field skills such as climbing, rigging, and equipment operation.
• Previous experience as a trainer, instructor, or mentor in a line worker or utility environment.
• Strong working knowledge of work methods, equipment, safety standards, and distribution system design.
• Thorough knowledge of OSHA requirements, NESC standards, and utility safety practices.
• Instructional training, adult-education certification, or similar qualifications are a plus.
• Experience training, coaching, mentoring, or leading field crews are preferred.
• Valid Class A CDL or the ability to obtain one is required.
• Must possess, or can obtain, a crane operator license specific to swing-cab equipment.
• Completion of a rigging awareness course is required or ability to obtain.
• Completion of a signal person awareness course is required or ability to obtain.
• In-depth knowledge of transmission hot-stick work practices is required.
• Must possess distribution knowledge or demonstrate the ability to develop this knowledge through a systematic approach within WFD, including gloving, underground residential distribution (URD), and troubleshooting.
• Work is performed under general supervision.

Distribution Instructor IV

• All the above requirements plus 8 - 12 years of technical/field experience.
• Work is performed under occasional general supervision.

Distribution Instructor V

• All the above requirements plus 12+ years of technical/field experience.
• Work is performed under limited general supervision.

• Combination of classrooms, training yard, and field environments.
• Frequent standing, walking, climbing, and exposure to outdoor conditions.
• May require occasional travel to remote sites or company locations;travel up to 50% of the time.
