PART I: SUMMARY OF POSITION The Long-Term Substitute is a temporary employee responsible for providing consistent instruction and supervision during extended absences (10+ consecutive days) of permanent Teachers or Teaching Assistants. Unlike day-to-day substitutes, the Long-Term Substitute is expected to fully immerse themselves in the assigned classroom, assuming the daily professional responsibilities of the permanent staff member. This includes delivering curriculum, managing student growth, and maintaining administrative records to ensure no lapse in student progress.
PART II: MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
A. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE Minimum education required to meet ISBE licensure requirements for Substitute or Professional Educator licensure. Experience working with school-aged children preferred - previous early childhood experience a plus.
B. CREDENTIALS: Valid Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) Professional Educator License (PEL) or Substitute License (SUB). Note: Individuals holding only a Short-Term Substitute (STS) License do not qualify for Long-Term assignments due to the 5-consecutive-day statutory limitation. License must be registered in Lake County Regional Office of Education (Region 34). Successful completion of criminal background check/fingerprinting and evidence of physical fitness for duty.
C. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Curriculum Execution: Ability to interpret and deliver complex lesson plans and instructional materials. Communication & Collaboration: Effective oral and written communication with students, parents, staff, and administrators. Bilingual skills (Spanish) are preferred. Instructional Technology: Proficiency in utilizing district-specific classroom technology and safety protocols. Commitment: Ability to maintain a consistent presence for the full duration of the assignment.

Instructional Continuity: Provide consistent instruction in accordance with provided lesson plans, classroom procedures, and district curriculum. Stakeholder Communication: Communicate effectively with parents regarding student progress and collaborate with school staff to support academic and social-emotional needs. Classroom Management: Maintain a safe, respectful, and orderly environment; monitor behavior and enforce school rules consistently. Academic Reporting: Take attendance, grade assignments (if applicable), and complete required classroom or district documentation to track student progress. Professional Immersion: Become familiar with the specific grade level, student needs (IEPs/504s), and classroom environment to ensure a seamless transition for students. Supervision: Supervise students in classrooms and during transitions, lunch, and recess as assigned. District Compliance: Follow all district policies, procedures, safety protocols, and confidentiality requirements (FERPA).
PART IV: STAFF SUPERVISION This position does not have supervisory responsibilities over other district employees but is responsible for the direct supervision and safety of students in the classroom and school environment.
PART V: EMPLOYMENT STATUS (AT-WILL) Employment as a Long-Term Substitute with Round Lake Area Schools District 116 is on an "at-will" basis. This means that either the District or the employee may terminate the employment relationship at any time, with or without cause or notice. Long-term assignments are temporary and do not establish a contract for continued or permanent employment.
