Qualifications:
- High School Diploma, General Equivalent Development Certificate (GED) per West Virginia Code §18A-2-5
- Personnel must be or have been classified in this category or must pass the state prescribed exam for this position per West Virginia Code §18A-4-8e.
- Successfully complete the staff development program related to autism as determined by the West Virginia Department of Education
- Have two years of successful experience working with autistic students.
- Demonstrate the physical ability and stamina necessary to complete all job tasks, including those tasks related to insuring student safety.
- Applicants enrolled in an Autism Mentor program will be given consideration if not Autism Mentor's apply.
- Criminal background check per WV Code §18-5-15c
- The ability to perform the job duties and responsibilities of the position as contained in the Job Description
NOTE: The successful applicant will be working in a self contained classroom with students who may be as old as 21 years of age, and who may serious behavior and aggression tendancies. This position is physically and mentally challenging. The successful applicant will be required to sign a statment acknowleding their ability to meet the physical and emotional demands of the position. The following qualifications/skills/physical abilities are also necessary for this position:
- ASL communication skills
- Current CPI training
- Experience with students with behavior and/or aggression
- Changing diapers
- Assist students using the restroom including wiping
- Lift up to 200lbs often
- Ability to run after and contain eloping students
- Push wheelchairs uphill and/or for several hundred yards
- Walk long distances
- Participate with the student in physical education activities
- Climb stairs often each day
- Assist students with feeding themselves
- Accompany students to inclusion classes
- Assist students with seat and group work
Title:
"Aide I" means a person selected and trained for a teacher-aide classification such as monitor aide, clerical aide, classroom aide or general aide.
"Aide II" means a service person referred to in the "Aide I" classification who has completed a training program approved by the state board, or who holds a high school diploma or has received a general educational development certificate. Only a person classified in an Aide II class title may be employed as an aide in any special education program.
"Aide III" means a service person referred to in the "Aide I" classification who holds a high school diploma or a general educational development certificate; and
- Has completed six semester hours of college credit at an institution of higher education; or
- Is employed as an aide in a special education program and has one year's experience as an aide in special education.
"Aide IV" means a service person referred to in the "Aide I" classification who holds high school diploma or a general educational development certificate; and
- Has completed eighteen hours of State Board-approved college credit at a regionally accredited institution of higher education, or
- Has completed fifteen hours of State Board-approved college credit at a regionally accredited institution of higher education; and
- has successfully completed an in-service training program determined by the state Board to be the equivalent of three hours of college credit.
Autism Mentor standards:
- Meet the qualifications of "Aide III" as delineated in West Virginia Code 18A-4-8: Aide III means those personnel selected and trained for teacher-aide classifications such as monitor aide, clerical aide, classroom aide or general aide, and who hold a high school diploma or a general educational certificate, and have completed six semester hours of college credit at an institution of higher education or are employed as an aide in a special education program and have one year's experience as an aide in special education. The local school district is responsible for verifying this standard.
- Successful completion of a staff development program related to autism as determined by the West Virginia Department of Education: To become an Autism Mentor, an aide must earn, at a minimum, 15 points for participation in 30 hours of relevant staff development, which must include an overview of autism and positive behavior support strategies. Documentation of the individual's number of earned points must be on file in the Office of Special Education at the Department. The Office of Special Education reviews documentation submitted by the individual who wants to become an Autism Mentor and issues a letter to the individual and the county personnel director regarding the number of staff development points the individual has earned. This is the only criterion verified by the WV Department of Education, Office of Special Education.

Title:
Autism Mentor/Aide means personnel employed to work with autistic students who meet the standards established by the State Board of Education.
Job Summary:
The Autism Mentor provides daily support for autistic students.
The employee shall remain free of any alcohol or non-prescribed drugs while in the workplace. Alcohol and controlled substances which affect employee productivity, safety or judgment in the workplace will not be tolerated.
Staff members serve as role models for students in how to conduct themselves as citizens and as responsible, intelligent human beings.

Autism Mentor Performance Responsibilities:
- In addition to the job duties of an aide, an Autism Mentor will be working with students who:
- May have serious behavior problems.
- May have differences in their intellectual functioning.
- May have difficulty understanding and expressing emotions.
- May have challenges relating appropriately to people, events and objects, communication, and social behavior.
- May have no real fear of danger to self or others.
- May have difficulty generalizing, following directions, sequencing, and staying on task outside their area of interest.
- May have issues / challenges adjusting to change in routines.
- May be nonverbal or delayed in language, speech, or meaningful communication.
- May require assistance with the daily living needs including toileting, with special feeding, with extended time, with mobility and special devices.
- May exhibit low levels of cognitive functioning and problem solving.
- May need academic assistance in specific educational programs.
Additional Duties:
- Administration of medication to Special Education and Regular Education Students in accordance with West Virginia Code §18-5-22 and a student health care plan.
- Working with adaptive equipment, prosthetic devices and augmentative communication devices.
- Participation in and implementation of specialized training, including CPR, First Aide, Passive Restraint, Behavior Management, etc.
- Working with developmentally disabled students, medically fragile and/or orthopedically impaired students.
- Implementation of health care and behavioral plans.
- Working in a team teaching setting under the supervision of certified professionals.
- Implementation of intervention techniques, positioning, lifting and handling techniques designed by teacher and related services providers.
- The use of Physical Intervention and Support Techniques.
- Maintains positive work habits.
- Maintains confidentiality.
- Performs duties efficiently and productively.
- Maintains and/or upgrades job-related skills.
- Always develops and maintains a safe work environment.
- Instill in students the belief and practice of ethical principles and democratic values.
- Other duties as assigned by the classroom teacher, building administrator, Special Education Director, or Superintendent.
Aide Performance Responsibilities:
- Performs duties as outlined by the classroom teacher.
- Special Education Aides will be required to complete the Braxton County Schools Medication Administration Training and administer medications as appropriate.
- Assist in lifting, feeding, toileting, and changing diapers or clothing of special needs students.
- Assists teacher as needed with planning, preparation, and distribution of classroom materials.
- Conducts learning games with students according to established procedures.
- Assists with supervision and instruction of children; copying, cutting, coloring, etc., to construct materials and bulletin boards.
- Provides individualized and small-group instruction to reinforce skills that have been taught by the teacher.
- Assists in implementing lessons based on district and school objectives and needs and abilities of students.
- Keeps files of the children's work, test scores, health services, etc.
- Prepares routine notices concerning activities, meetings, etc.
- Conducts activities for students with directions firmly established by the teacher.
- Monitors testing and classroom tasks assigned to students.
- Corrects activities assigned to students.
- Operates audiovisual equipment during instructional duties.
- Secures materials for instructional programs through proper channels.
- Prepares material for instruction as outlined by the classroom teacher.
- Available for consultations with parents.
- Complies with in-service training required by Braxton County Schools.
- Assists the teacher in supervision of children in the classroom and to various locations in the school including, but not limited to, instructional areas, the cafeteria, and the bus.
- Participates in bus duty, hall monitoring, lunchroom duty, playground duty.
- Keeps records as needed to accomplish evaluation for programs and sees that all information on students is current and available for review at all times.
- Keeps a skill mastery list on each student up to date in cooperation with classroom teacher where required.
- Rides buses with students as assigned and assists in maintaining discipline on the bus.
- Assist students in boarding and disembarking from buses.
- Secure students in seats with approved safety equipment for buses.
- Assist in lifting, feeding, toileting, and changing diapers or clothing of special needs students.
- Provide care and supervision of students diagnosed with autism or other special education needs.
- Maintains positive work habits.
- Maintains confidentiality.
- Performs duties efficiently and productively.
- Maintains and/or upgrades job-related skills.
- Always develops and maintains a safe work environment.
