    Description

    United Concrete | Wallingford, CT Full-time · On-site ·

    About the Role

United Concrete supplies precast concrete products throughout New England, New York, and New Jersey from five manufacturing facilities. We're hiring a Logistics Coordinator for the Underground Division at our Wallingford, CT plant, a 60+ employee facility producing manholes, box culvert, reinforced concrete pipe, wet wells, junction boxes, utility vaults, and tunnel liner/jacking segments.

You'll own the daily shipping schedule for the Underground Division: getting heavy, weight-critical loads out of the Wallingford yard and into the trench in lay sequence, on the day the contractor's pipe crew needs them. You'll report to the Plant Manager and coordinate with our sister plants on load-sharing and inventory transfers.

    What You'll Do

    • Build the daily/weekly ship schedule around contractor lay schedules, trench progress, and production/curing timelines.
    • Dispatch company drivers and outside carriers, flatbed, step-deck, and heavy-haul for large-diameter pipe, box sections, and tunnel segments.
    • Plan loads for weight, not just length. Underground product is heavy; you'll manage axle weights, overweight permits, bridge and road postings, and approved routes.
    • Navigate Northeast permitting. Multi-state overweight/oversize permits across CT, MA, RI, NH, VT, ME, PA, NY, and NJ, including CTDOT, MassDOT, NYSDOT, NJDOT, Port Authority crossings, NYC-specific restrictions, and municipal permits, curfews, and holiday travel bans.
    • Sequence deliveries to match the installation run, invert-out, station-by-station, not just "what's ready in the yard."
    • Coordinate the yard: stage product ahead of truck arrival, verify marks and quantities, and ensure proper cradling, chocking, dunnage, and securement for round pipe and large box sections.
    • Handle jobsite realities: tight urban access in Boston, Hartford, Providence, and the NYC metro; one-lane trench roads; shaft-site deliveries with limited crane windows; and work under DOT lane closures and night work windows.
    • Own the paperwork: BOLs, shipping tickets, PODs, permits, escort arrangements, and freight invoice reconciliation in [ERP system].
    • Report on-time delivery, freight cost per load and per piece, and trailer utilization to the Plant Manager.
    • Coordinate inter-plant transfers when Wallingford needs product or capacity from another United Concrete facility.

    Schedule & Work Environment

    • Hours: Monday–Friday, 6:00 AM – 4:30 PM, with occasional Saturdays 6:00 AM – 12:00 PM
    • Environment: Split between office and outdoor yard; PPE required ( high-vis vest, safety glasses, steel-toe boots)
    • Physical: Frequent walking on uneven ground; occasional lifting up to [40] lbs
    • Travel: None

    Requirements

    Required

    • 2+ years in dispatch, shipping, or transportation coordination
    • Working knowledge of DOT regs, overweight/oversize permitting, and flatbed securement
    • Strong organization under pressure, this schedule changes daily

    • Comfortable working in an active plant yard in all New England weather

    Preferred

    • Precast, pipe, aggregate, or heavy-haul experience
    • Familiarity with utility/tunnel product lines (ASTM C76 / C1433 / C478), lay schedules, or submittal drawings
    • Experience with Northeast multi-state permitting and pilot-car coordination
    • Bilingual English/Spanish
    • OSHA 10/30; CDL a plus (not required)
