Locomotive Maintenance Mechanic – Diesel/Electric Systems

Pay & schedules
- Pay: $19.00 – $23.50 per hour (commensurate with experience and shift)
- Day Shift: Monday – Thursday, 6:00 AM – 4:00 PM (40 hours / 10-hour shifts)
- Weekend Shift: Friday – Sunday, 6:00 AM – 6:00 PM (Work 36 hours, Paid for 40 hours + $1.00/hr Shift Differential)
What you’ll handle
- Comprehensive inspection, troubleshooting, repair, and upkeep of locomotives and their mechanical systems.
- Fault isolation on diesel engines, air systems, trucks, and other critical components.
- Preventative maintenance and on-the-spot repair work.
- Component work on wheels/trucks, traction motors, springs, couplers, draft gear, gear cases, cylinder heads, air compressors, and turbochargers.
- Daily service tasks: fueling, watering, lubricating, cleaning, and supply verification.
- FRA-compliant periodic and annual inspections.
- Reading and applying blueprints, schematics, work instructions, and technical references.
- Accurate documentation: inspections, repairs, PM activities; timely completion of work orders and travelers.
- Safe operation of torque wrenches, pipe threaders, tubing benders, cutting torches, electric/pneumatic tools, forklifts, and overhead cranes.
- Housekeeping: organized benches, tools, and work areas.
- Independent work that meets safety, quality, and productivity standards.
- Peer support: mentor seasonal and part-time teammates; share best practices.
- Strict adherence to railroad safety protocols, FRA rules, required PPE, and blue signal/worker protection procedures.
- Application of advanced mechanical skills in daily tasks.
Stretch projects (as experience grows)
- Aligning rotating assemblies.
- System identification and locomotive air testing.
- Use of precision measuring instruments and specialty tooling.
- Advanced troubleshooting of complex mechanical and pneumatic systems.

Physical realities
- Lift up to 50 lbs; navigate tight, confined, and hard-to-reach spaces.
- Stand, walk, squat, kneel, climb stairs; operate near heavy equipment.
- Work indoors/outdoors across varying weather and temperatures.
- Exposure to noise, vibration, oils/lubricants, torches, welding, and mechanical equipment.
- PPE required at all times; follow every safety procedure.
This position is safety-sensitive and performed on/around railroad tracks, locomotives, and heavy equipment. FRA regulations, blue signal/worker protection, PPE requirements, and company policies must be followed at all times.

Ideal backgrounds
Experience from diesel engines, heavy equipment, commercial trucking, automotive, aircraft, agricultural equipment, or similar mechanical environments translates well here.
