Locomotive Engineer/Railway Specialist 88U Technical Instructor

The position delivers classroom, simulator, and field-based instruction for 88U Railway Specialist Military Occupational Specialty (MOS) training, Locomotive Engineer Certification and Recertification courses, and Conductor Certification courses. Provide instruction on car coupling and uncoupling, rail car inspections, preventive maintenance checks and services, cargo lashings and bracing, and general locomotive maintenance and track repair.

Summary:

The Locomotive Engineer/Railway Specialist 88U Technical Instructor provides technical instruction and subject matter expertise in locomotive engineering, railway operations, and rail safety. The position delivers classroom, simulator, and field-based instruction for 88U Railway Specialist Military Occupational Specialty (MOS) training, Locomotive Engineer Certification and Recertification courses, and Conductor Certification courses. The instructor provides ongoing training and technical support while other courses and classes are in session and ensures instruction is aligned with applicable railway operating procedures, safety requirements, and Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) regulations.

Responsibilities:

Essential Job Functions:

• Provide classroom, simulator, and field instruction for 88U Railway Specialist MOS, Locomotive Engineer Certification and Recertification, and Conductor Certification courses.
• Provide instruction on locomotive and rail car air brake systems, rail safety, operating rules, and applicable federal regulations.
• Train students on locomotive engine controls, railway signaling, communication procedures, and train operating instructions.
• Provide instruction on car coupling and uncoupling, rail car inspections, preventive maintenance checks and services, cargo lashings and bracing, and general locomotive maintenance and track repair.
• Evaluate and provide hands-on instruction to students in locomotive engineering, railway operations, and conductor procedures.
• Provide ongoing technical instruction and support while other courses and classes are in session.
• Ensure training is conducted in accordance with applicable railway operating procedures, safety requirements, and certification standards.

Qualifications:

Necessary Skills and Knowledge:

• Advanced knowledge of locomotive engineering and railway operations.
• Knowledge of 88U Railway Specialist MOS duties, procedures, and operational requirements.
• Knowledge of locomotive and rail car air brake systems and related operating procedures.
• Knowledge of railway operating rules, rail safety practices, and applicable FRA regulations.
• Knowledge of locomotive controls, signaling systems, train operations, and railway communications.
• Knowledge of rail car coupling and uncoupling procedures, inspections, and preventive maintenance practices.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Minimum of 3–5 years of experience operating as a conductor and locomotive engineer.
• Must be a qualified FRA or Transportation School locomotive engineer/conductor.
• Demonstrated experience operating locomotives and performing railway conductor duties.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Previous experience instructing or training locomotive engineers, conductors, or 88U Railway Specialists.
• Experience delivering classroom, simulator, and field-based railway instruction.
• Experience with Locomotive Engineer Certification and Recertification training.
• Experience with Conductor Certification training.
• Previous U.S. Army railway operations or 88U MOS experience.
• Experience developing or updating railway training materials, lesson plans, or practical exercises.

Pay and Benefits

The pay rate for this position is $34.90 hourly.
