  • Experience leading workshops or training sessions for adults, whether face-to-face or remotely over platforms like Zoom or MS Teams.

  • Expressed confidence explaining rules, policies, or regulations clearly, whether you're talking to community members, coworkers, or government folks. Written or spoken, you know how to get your point across.

  • Demonstrated hands-on experience with accounting software (like QuickBooks or Quicken) and can interpret budgets or financial statements without breaking a sweat, especially in a government or nonprofit setting.

Minimum Qualifications

Local Government Specialist 1 Minimum Qualifications (Range: 13)

Any combination of education and/or experience that provides the applicant with competencies in

  • Administration and Management: Knowledge of planning, coordination, and execution of business functions, resource allocation, and production.
  • Analytical Thinking/Problem Solving: uses a logical, systematic, sequential approach to address problems or opportunities or manage a situation by drawing on one's knowledge and experience base and calling on other references and resources as necessary.
  • Oral and Written Communication: Expresses information (for example, ideas or facts) to individuals or groups effectively, taking into account the audience and nature of the information (for example, technical, sensitive, controversial); makes clear and convincing oral and written presentations; listens to others, attends to nonverbal cues, and responds appropriately.
  • Public Service Motivation: Shows a commitment to serve the public. Ensures that actions meet public needs; aligns organizational objectives and practices with public interests.

A completed Local Government Specialist Flex 1 Training Plan

  • Self-Management: Sets well-defined and realistic personal goals; displays a high level of initiative, effort, and commitment towards completing assignments in a timely manner; works with minimal supervision; is motivated to achieve; demonstrates responsible behavior.
  • Teaches Others: Helps others learn; identifies training needs; provides constructive reinforcement; coaches others on how to perform tasks; acts as a mentor.
  • Technical Competence: Uses knowledge that is acquired through formal training or extensive on-the-job experience to perform ones job; works with, understands, and evaluates technical information related to the job; advises others on technical issues.

COVER LETTER

Provide a cover letter detailing your experience teaching adults and/or writing or proofreading technical documents, municipal or tribal documents, or financial documents.

INTERVIEW PROCESS

Interviews may be conducted in person or via Zoom and will include two (2) exercises. The first exercise will be to create a presentation on a local government issue with both visual and oral components. The second exercise will be a written exercise.

If selected, please provide the following at the time of the interview:

  • Three (3) references with current contact information - two (2) of which need to be former supervisors.
  • Last three (3) performance evaluations (if available).

SPECIAL NOTICE

This position requires frequent travel to rural communities in Alaska, some of which have no commercial accommodations and requires the incumbent to sleep in city hall or in a school. In addition, travel to these rural communities may be via small planes and other conveyances.

FLEXIBLY STAFFED

This position is flexibly staffed. The level of the job offer will be based on the selected candidate's credibly possessed and proven competencies. If hired at the lower level, you will be promoted to the higher level after successfully completing the training plan and demonstrating competency in the work.
