Play a key role in upgrading, troubleshooting, and optimizing core infrastructure in a critical on-site environment, with a strong focus on enterprise NAS and SAN storage. This senior-level position will lead infrastructure upgrades across Linux, Windows, and enterprise storage, including a new data storage cluster, production data migration, and a new Hyper-V compute environment.
The role serves as a senior technical authority for storage design, performance, and data protection while partnering closely with Bioinformatics teams that depend on high-throughput file access.
Own the design, build, and lifecycle of enterprise NAS and SAN platforms, including capacity layout, tiering, protection policies, and performance targets.
Complete the physical and logical integration of newly racked VAST Data hardware into the core Aliso Viejo network.
Configure views, NFS/SMB/S3 protocols, quotas, QoS, snapshots, and replication for production use.
Configure and manage NFS v3/v4.x and SMB/CIFS shares, export policies, and multi-protocol permissions.
Integrate storage with Active Directory/LDAP for consistent identity mapping across Linux and Windows clients.
Provision and manage block storage over Fibre Channel and iSCSI, including LUN creation and masking, FC zoning, initiator groups, and MPIO/multipathing on Linux and Windows hosts.
Design and present shared storage for Hyper-V failover clusters, including Cluster Shared Volumes (CSV) and SMB 3.x file shares for VM workloads.
Plan and execute foundational migrations from legacy storage using tools such as rsync, Robocopy, or vendor migration utilities.
Validate data integrity with checksums, minimize cutover downtime, and hand over designated shares to the Bioinformatics team for validation.
Monitor IOPS, throughput, and latency; tune storage and network paths for large-file, high-throughput genomics workloads.
Produce capacity forecasts that support procurement decisions.
Manage snapshots, replication, and backup integration, including tools such as Veeam, Commvault, or Rubrik.
Define and test RPO/RTO targets and conduct regular restore and disaster recovery tests.
Plan and execute non-disruptive firmware and software upgrades across storage arrays, controllers, HBAs, and switches.
Deploy, configure, and maintain Linux servers, including RHEL, Rocky/CentOS, or Ubuntu.
Perform NFS client tuning, autofs, and LVM administration.
Complete physical installation of new Hyper-V hosts and finalize cluster networking, storage, and configuration for production workloads.
Manage Windows Server environments, including Active Directory, GPO, DNS/DHCP, and file-share permissions.
Perform hardware audits, patching, and system updates to reduce security risk.
Serve as the primary escalation point for complex system and storage failures.
Perform root-cause analysis and implement fixes to prevent recurrence.
Apply access controls, encryption, and audit practices supporting a regulated healthcare and laboratory environment.
Maintain documentation for system and storage configurations, runbooks, DR plans, and procedures.
Mentor junior staff and provide effective knowledge transfer to customer operations teams.
7+ years of experience in systems administration or infrastructure engineering, including 5+ years of hands-on enterprise NAS and SAN administration in production environments.
Hands-on administration of at least one major enterprise storage platform such as VAST Data, NetApp ONTAP, Dell PowerScale (Isilon), Dell PowerStore/Unity, Pure Storage, or HPE.
Deep working knowledge of NFS v3/v4.x and SMB 2/3, including export and share permissions, multi-protocol access, and AD/LDAP identity mapping.
Proven experience with Fibre Channel and iSCSI, including switch zoning using Brocade or Cisco MDS, LUN provisioning and masking, and host multipathing using DM-Multipath and Windows MPIO.
Track record of planning and executing multi-terabyte to petabyte-scale migrations with integrity validation and minimal downtime.
Strong understanding of RAID and erasure coding, snapshots, replication, enterprise backup tools, and disaster recovery planning and testing.
Ability to diagnose and tune IOPS, throughput, and latency across storage, network, and host layers.
Senior-level Linux administration, shell scripting using Bash and Python, and server hardening.
Proven ability to manage Windows Server and Active Directory alongside Linux environments.
Hands-on experience building and supporting Hyper-V failover clusters, including shared storage for CSV.
Solid understanding of TCP/IP, VLANs, DNS, DHCP, and firewalls.
Ability to work independently in a fast-paced, on-site environment, lead multiple hardware and software projects simultaneously, and communicate clearly with technical and scientific stakeholders.
VAST Data experience.
Storage certifications such as NetApp NCIE or NCAP, Dell Technologies Proven Professional (PowerScale or PowerStore), Pure Storage FlashArray Architect, SNIA SCSP/SCSE, or VAST Data training.
Systems certifications such as RHCSA, RHCE, CompTIA Linux+, or Microsoft Certified: Windows Server Hybrid Administrator Associate.
Experience supporting bioinformatics, genomics, or other high-throughput research workloads.
Experience in high-availability, regulated environments such as healthcare, clinical labs, or life sciences.
Experience with object storage (S3) and cloud tiering or archive to AWS or Azure.
Experience automating storage and infrastructure tasks with Ansible, PowerShell, or vendor REST APIs.
Exposure to VMware vSphere or KVM in addition to Hyper-V.
Familiarity with high-speed storage networking, including 25/100GbE, jumbo frames, and RDMA/RoCE or InfiniBand.
