Lighting Services Engineer 
Location- Anniston–Sylacauga–Roanoke, AL triangle.
Contract- 3 Years
Client- Alabama Power

Position Overview

The Lighting Services Engineer supports Alabama Power Company’s Distribution organization, with a primary focus on new residential lighting projects while also being available to support commercial and industrial customers in the future. This role is highly field-oriented, requiring frequent on-site checks to ensure safe, efficient, and customer-focused lighting designs. The engineer will design, implement, and maintain lighting solutions that balance aesthetics, functionality, safety, and energy efficiency, while aligning with APC and Southern Company standards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Field Inspections & Project Support

    • Conduct 3–4 field days per week to perform site evaluations, check installations, and gather field data for project designs.

    • Assess existing lighting conditions and identify retrofit or upgrade opportunities.

  • Lighting System Design

    • Collaborate with residential developers, commercial/industrial customers, and internal teams to design energy-efficient, code-compliant lighting systems.

    • Perform photometric analyses, fixture placement, and lighting calculations to ensure proper illumination levels and compliance with NESC/NEC and IESNA standards.

    • Create detailed lighting plans, technical drawings, and specifications for construction and contractor use.

  • Energy Efficiency & Technology Integration

    • Prioritize sustainable solutions, including LED technology, daylight harvesting, occupancy sensors, and smart lighting controls.

    • Explore and recommend advanced smart lighting automation where applicable to improve performance and energy savings.

  • Project Management & Documentation

    • Estimate costs, prepare budgets, and monitor project financials.

    • Oversee quality control, commissioning, and system performance verification.

    • Maintain accurate records of project deliverables, change orders, and as-built documentation.

  • Client & Stakeholder Communication

    • Act as the primary point of contact for developers, contractors, and customers within the assigned service territory.

    • Provide regular project updates, troubleshoot issues, and ensure client satisfaction.

    • Educate clients on system benefits, energy savings, and maintenance requirements.

Qualifications

  • Education

    • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Architectural Engineering, Lighting Design, or a related field.

    • Lighting Certification (LC) or equivalent highly desirable.

  • Experience

    • Proven track record in lighting design and engineering (residential, commercial, or industrial projects).

    • Experience with utility distribution projects strongly preferred.

    • Familiarity with lighting design software such as AGi32, Dialux, AutoCAD.

  • Technical Skills

    • Strong knowledge of lighting principles, photometrics, and controls.

    • Working knowledge of codes and standards (NESC, NEC, ASHRAE, IESNA, and energy efficiency codes).

    • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and design tools.

  • Soft Skills

    • Strong design creativity and attention to detail.

    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills for client and stakeholder interaction.

    • Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines in a fast-paced environment.

    • Strong teamwork and collaboration skills with engineers, architects, contractors, and customers.

Work Environment & Requirements

  • Fieldwork: 3–4 days per week in the Eastern Division territory.

  • Travel: Must have valid driver’s license and reliable transportation for site visits (mileage reimbursed per company policy).

  • Conditions: Outdoor work in Alabama seasonal weather and on uneven terrain.

  • Flexibility: Role may expand to commercial and industrial lighting projects in addition to residential.
