    Light Duty Mechanic — Delaware Express Shuttle & Tours

    Location: Newark, DE
    Employment Type: Full-Time

    Position Summary

    Delaware Express Shuttle & Tours seeks a dependable Light Duty Mechanic to service and maintain our fleet of passenger vans and sedan vehicles. The ideal candidate will ensure that our vehicles are always safe, reliable, and well-maintained through routine inspections, preventative maintenance, and timely repairs.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Perform preventative maintenance on light-duty vehicles, including oil changes, filter replacement, lubrication, tire rotations, and brake service.

    • Conduct regular inspections (pre-trip, post-trip, and scheduled) to check for safety issues, wear, and performance problems.

    • Use computerized diagnostic tools and visual inspection to diagnose mechanical and electrical issues.

    • Repair or replace faulty components (e.g., belts, brakes, hoses, batteries, spark plugs, suspension parts).

    • Perform minor engine and transmission maintenance or repairs as needed.

    • Translate technical issues into clear, understandable explanations for non-technical colleagues or customers; advise on recommended repairs or maintenance.

    • Stay current on evolving automotive technologies, repair techniques, and regulatory requirements.

    • Maintain a clean, safe, and well-organized work area; adhere to proper safety protocols and use personal protective equipment (PPE).

    • Manage inventory of common parts, order replacements, and document parts usage.

    • Record all maintenance and repair work accurately in work orders or fleet management system.

    • Assist in roadside or mobile repairs when needed, as part of our fleet’s operational support.

    • Communicate with management and other team members to schedule vehicle maintenance so as to minimize vehicle downtime.

    Required Skills & Qualifications

    • High school diploma or GED (or equivalent).

    • Valid driver’s license and a clean driving record.

    • Basic mechanical aptitude and familiarity with vehicle systems (engine, brakes, steering, suspension, etc.).

    • Ability to lift and maneuver parts (tires, batteries, etc.), and perform physically demanding tasks (bending, kneeling, lifting).

    • Strong customer service skills and a friendly, professional demeanor.

    • Good communication skills — both verbal and written — to explain mechanical issues and repairs.

    • Organizational skills to maintain a clean workspace and proper documentation of work orders.

    • Willingness to learn and adapt to new technologies and repair methods.

    • Flexibility to work holidays and weekends when needed and to be on call for road service if needed.

    Preferred (but Not Required)

    • Formal training from a technical or vocational school.

    • ASE (Automotive Service Excellence) certification or other relevant credentials.

    • Experience working on fleet vehicles, shuttles, or passenger vans.

    • Previous experience with computerized diagnostic tools.

    Working Conditions

    • Work performed in an indoor shop and potentially outdoors, depending on repair or roadside needs.

    • Exposure to grease, oil, exhaust, noise, and other automotive shop hazards.

    • Occasional after-hours, weekend, or on-call work may be required to support fleet operations.

    • Must follow all safety procedures (e.g., using jack stands, PPE, proper tool handling).
