The Berlin Area School District is searching for certified lifeguards. A lifeguard ensures the safety of the pool patrons by enforcing the established pool rules and responding to emergencies when they arise; administers First‐Aid or CPR when needed and reports all serious accidents to the Community Education and Recreation Coordinator. Complete necessary paperwork at the conclusion of all rescues and accidents.

Responsibilities, Tasks & Duties:

  • Ensure the safety of the pool patrons by enforcing the established pool rules and responding to emergencies when they arise.
  • Administer First‐Aid or CPR when needed and report all serious accidents to the Community Education and Recreation Coordinator.
  • Complete necessary paperwork at the conclusion of all rescues and accidents.
  • Participate in random "in‐house" lifeguard audits.
  • Participate in random lifeguard audits from outside agencies.
  • Attend all scheduled shifts and lifeguard in‐service meetings.
  • Act as a substitute when needed to ensure a safe and effective swimming environment.
  • Maintain a good working relationship with staff members, maintenance personnel, administrative personnel, and pool patrons.
  • Maintain safe and sanitary pool conditions. This includes, but is not limited to checking pool chemicals at regular intervals and making the proper adjustments as assigned by the Community Education and Recreation Coordinator.
  • Assures adherence to Berlin Area School District policies and procedures.
  • Establishes and maintains satisfactory working relationships with the general public and Berlin Area School District personnel.
  • Provides reasonable accommodations for participants and personnel in accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act.
  • General maintenance of pool deck, locker rooms.
  • Rule enforcement.
  • Attend staff meetings.
  • Participate in pool rentals and birthday party rentals.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Clay Lamberton Elementary is one of three schools that make up the Berlin Area School District. Clay Lamberton Elementary (4K-5), Berlin Middle School (6-8), and Berlin High School sit on the same campus and serve as a hub of activity for the greater Berlin community. The Berlin Area School District comprises 14 municipalities, with the City of Berlin at the center. Berlin is a rural community with a population of 5,500 located approximately 20 minutes west of Oshkosh and 10 minutes north of Green Lake. The Fox River runs through the center of the historic Victorian downtown. Agriculture, health services, light industry, and retail shops comprise Berlin's economy.

Requirements:

  • Must be at least 15 years old.
  • Certified as a lifeguard by the American Red Cross desired, or ability to acquire.
  • CPR/First Aid/AED Certification desired, or ability to acquire.
  • Should have a history of confidentiality, stability, neatness, punctuality, loyalty, ethical consciousness, organization skills, and flexibility.

Working Conditions/Environment:

  • Ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing
  • Ability to work independently and with others.
  • Ability to recognize problems and take the initiative to solve them.
  • Experience and ability to demonstrate the organization and prioritization of job responsibilities, as well as being flexible.
  • Exercises good judgment.
  • Ability to demonstrate effective working relationships with staff and the community in a positive manner.
  • The lifeguard may have to work under stressful situations when first-aid or CPR is required.
  • May be exposed to a high humidity and 86‐degree temperatures indoors.

  • Perform a lifeguard skills test during the interview process; including endurance, a timed event, and demonstration of CPR and lifeguard rescue skills.

  • Hear noises and distress signals in the aquatic environment, including in the water and anywhere around the zone of responsibility.

  • See and observe all sections of an assigned zone or area of responsibility.
  • Able to lift at least 50 pounds.

Pay: Hourly wage starting at $14.00.
