    Description

    PRIMARY PURPOSE:

    To assist the school nurse in all phases of the School Health Program: implementation, maintenance, evaluation and positive atmosphere. To identify, modify or remove barriers which may impeded health and learning in the educational setting.

    QUALIFICATIONS:

    Education/Certification:

    High School Diploma, required

    Valid Texas Licensed Vocational Nurse, required

    Special Knowledge/Skills:

    CPR, clinical nursing skills, (i.e., catheterization, G-tube feedings, ostomies); computer skills, preferred; Effective communication skills and interpersonal skills

    General clerical duties and file maintenance skills

    Bilingual, preferred (English/Spanish)

    Experience:

    Three (3) years' experience in school or community health, home health, clinical/hospital, which includes working with children and/or adolescents, required

    Days: 192

    Hourly Pay Range:

    Minimum: $19.50

    Midpoint: $23.35

    Maximum: $27.20

    MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

    • Work under the immediate guidance and supervision of the school nurse. (Has no responsibility as the sole health program provider.)
    • Assist the school nurse in maintaining the Comprehensive School Health Program.
    • Provide basic first aid, as per protocols.
    • Administer prescribed and over the counter medications.
    • Administer or assist students with prescribed treatments/feedings.
    • Assist in maintaining immunization compliance.
    • Participate in district-wide mandated health screening program.
    • Document and maintain student health information on computer system and hard copy in a confidential manner.
    • Inventory and maintain office and health supplies including classroom first aid boxes/supplies.
    • Maintain office and health equipment.
    • Provide evidence of participation in continuing education programs to increase understanding and update skills (20 contact hours [CEUs] required every two years for license renewal).
    • Follow McAllen ISD customer service standards.
    • Perform other duties assigned by immediate supervisor (primary evaluator).

    Computer, scale, sphygmomanometer, stethoscope, impedance machine, nebulizer, suction machine, audiometer, Gastrostomy tubes, wheel chairs
