Introduction

Bull Run Library in Manassas, VA is seeking a highly motivated individual with a passion for serving the public to join their Youth Services Department as a Library Assistant. This staff member will spend the majority of their time working on our Service Desk assisting customers. This staff member will assist youth services staff with collection maintenance, data entry, and running reports. They may also assist with occasional youth services programs, displays and outreach. This is an excellent opportunity for someone who wants to gain experience on a Youth Services team.

About This Role:

Customer Service

  • Provides welcoming, responsive customer service to patrons of all ages.
  • Processes payments and fee collections using the cash register.
  • Provides hands-on technology assistance to patrons.
  • Maintains professional, clear communication across all channels-in person, over the phone, and via email.

Youth Programming & Community Outreach

  • Assists librarians with educational programs for youth from birth through age 18.
  • Coordinates programming inventory by keeping supplies organized, stocked, and tracked.
  • Creates visually appealing book and material displays to drive engagement.
  • May assist with community outreach events and programs.

Collection Management & Operations

  • Performing collection maintenance.
  • Active participant in ongoing staff meetings, professional development, and training opportunities.

Minimum Requirements:

8th grade education and 6 months experience in a customer service role working in a public library, school library, bookstore, or other retail setting

Preferences:

  • Experience designing, facilitating, and supporting age-appropriate programs and services for youth from infancy through age 18
  • Experience addressing customer inquiries in a fast-paced, high-volume customer-facing environment
  • Experience handling cash transactions and processing payments
  • Experience using Microsoft Office applications

Special Requirements:

The position may require travel to other branches within the system. A DMV check will be conducted for employees who drive while on County business.

Work Schedule:

This is a part-time position working 20 hours per week. Scheduling flexibility is necessary. Scheduled hours will fall within the following operating hours: Monday through Wednesday, 9 am - 8 pm, and Thursday through Sunday, 9 am - 5 pm. Schedule includes one evening per week and rotating weekends. Hours may change based on the needs of the library.

Starting Salary Range:

$19.41 - $24.88 / hour
