    Job Description

    Chesapeake Public Library (CPL) is looking for a dedicated and enthusiastic Library Assistant II to work in Youth and Family Services in a busy public library. If you have a passion for working with your local community, being creative in all-ages programs as well as programs for young children and their families, then consider applying.

    Responsibilities Include:

    • Design and lead engaging programming for regularly occurring in-house programs, specialized one-off programs, and various outreach opportunities for the public, both indoors and outdoors.
    • Assist customers of all ages, but especially children, teens, and families with accessing library resources, including public computers, reader's advisory, and more.
    • Assist with collection maintenance and promotion, including but not limited to shelving, sorting, creating displays, and shelf-reading.
    • Assist with operating and maintaining specialized library equipment such as makerspace tools and Automated Material Handling systems.
    • Provide front-line customer service and collaborative support to other departments, through tasks such as registering new library users, checking in/out materials, and maintaining accurate records.

    The weekly schedule varies and includes day, evening, and weekend hours. May also include after-hours programming.

    Required Qualifications

    VOCATIONAL/EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENT:

    Requires one year of college in liberal arts or library science or any equivalent combination of education and customer service experience.

    EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT:

    In addition to satisfying the vocational/education standards, this class requires a minimum of 6 months related, full-time equivalent library or customer service experience. Six months' public library experience preferred.

    SPECIAL CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES:

    Requires a valid driver's license and a driving record that is in compliance with City Driving Standards.

    SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

    Employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or city-wide emergencies. Emergency operations support work and work locations may be outside of normal job duties.

    Preferred Qualifications

    Experience working with computers, new technologies and tools such as 3D printers.

    Strong communication and organizational skills and the ability to work collaboratively with staff, interns, and volunteers.
