Description
The Learn to Skate Head Coach is responsible for the overall leadership, development, and administration of the Learn to Skate program at West Shore Community Ice Arena. This position plays a vital role in introducing skaters of all ages and abilities to the sport of skating while creating a positive, safe, and engaging environment for participants, families, and staff. This position reports to the Ice Arena Director.
Job Duties
Primary Responsibilities
- Oversee all aspects of the Learn to Skate program, including curriculum development, class scheduling, and program evaluation
- Recruit, hire, train, supervise, and evaluate Learn to Skate instructors and support staff
- Ensure all classes align with Learn to Skate USA standards and best practices
- Foster a welcoming atmosphere that promotes skill development, confidence, and a lifelong love of skating
- Coordinate seasonal registration, class placement, and participant communications
- Monitor class sizes and instructor assignments to maintain high-quality instruction
- Organize special events, exhibitions, competitions, and program promotions
- Collaborate with arena management on marketing initiatives, community outreach, and participant retention
- Maintain accurate program records, attendance, and financial reporting
- Ensure compliance with all arena safety policies, risk management procedures, and governing body requirements
- Work with West Shore Wolves and Lakeshore Badger programs
- Increase program enrollment and participant retention
- Develop a strong pipeline for figure skating and hockey programs
- Strengthen community involvement and awareness of skating opportunities
- Uphold the reputation and mission of West Shore Community Ice Arena
Qualifications
- Previous experience in skating instruction, coaching, or program management.
- Strong knowledge of Learn to Skate curriculum and skating progression.
- Excellent leadership, communication, and organizational skills.
- Ability to build positive relationships with skaters, parents, staff, and community partners.
- Current certification through Learn to Skate USA or willingness to obtain certification.
- First Aid, CPR, and SafeSport certification preferred.
- Experience with program registration software and basic administrative tasks is a plus

Physical Requirements
- Ability to skate for extended periods
- Lift and move equipment weighing up to 30 pounds
- Stand, bend, and demonstrate skating techniques throughout practice
Sessions take place for 2-3 hours on Sunday afternoons with 3-4 sessions per season.
Compensation
$25 - $35 hourly wage, commensurate with experience and qualifications.
