Lead Veterinary Technician

Assist with medical and surgical procedures and administer treatments as directed.

Set-up and clean-up after animal procedures, both in the hospital and in animal areas, including preparation of necessary pharmaceuticals and equipment.

Perform venipuncture, anesthetic induction and monitoring, injections, weighing, placement of intravenous catheters, fluid therapy, routine dental cleanings and obtain radiographs.

Act as x-ray, surgical, laboratory or treatment technician as indicated.

Fill prescriptions and assist with controlled pharmaceutical record keeping and inventory.

Assist veterinarians in monitoring efficacy, form of medication, and prescriptions for each patient.

Provide accurate patient observations and medical record entry.

Perform collection, processing, sample organization, preparation for shipment and evaluation of clinical laboratory samples, including blood, feces, urine and water samples; provide accurate and timely reports for mammal, avian, reptile and fish hematology and cytology.

Assist in maintaining routine preventative health schedules such as exams, vaccines, fecal logs and feeding charts.

Coordinate with outside companies for pickup of expire drugs, controlled drugs, medical waste and items for incineration.

Develop and maintain proficiency in remote delivery (dart) system.

Serve on emergency immobilization team and maintain readiness for animal emergencies.

Manage inventory control systems, monitoring reorder points and expiration dates, discarding expired medications and biologics, ordering replacement stocks and equipment inventory as appropriate.

Provide proper care and husbandry for hospitalized and quarantine animals as needed.

Supervise veterinary and technical students.

QUALIFICATIONS

Eligibility to become a certified veterinary technician (CVT) in Pennsylvania within 3 months of employment.
\t\t\t\t\t\t
\t\t\t\t\t
\t\t\t\t\t \t\t\t\t\t
\t\t\t\t\t\t * \t\t\t\t\t\t
Must be a graduate of an accredited veterinary technician program with minimally an Associates of Applied Science degree.
\t\t\t\t\t\t

Must have a minimum of 3 years of experience as a working veterinary technician.
\t\t\t\t\t\t
\t\t\t\t\t\t * \t\t\t\t\t\t
3-5 years of experience working with zoological, aquatic, wildlife, or exotic species.
\t\t\t\t\t\t
\t\t\t\t\t\t * \t\t\t\t\t\t
Knowledge of Zoological Information Management System (ZIMS) preferred, but not required
\t\t\t\t\t\t
\t\t\t\t\t\t * \t\t\t\t\t\t
Must be flexible, self-motivated and a team player.

Must be able to establish and maintain a cooperative working relationship with all levels of management, employees in all departments and zoo guests
