General Description:

The City of Conway is accepting applications for a Lead Telecommunicator 1 position. This supervisory role is responsible for coordinating and overseeing employees engaged in receiving emergency and non-emergency calls, dispatching personnel and equipment, and providing pre-arrival instructions to callers. The Lead Telecommunicator also assists with daily dispatch operations and must be prepared to perform the duties of subordinate dispatch personnel as needed.

This is a critical position that requires strong leadership, communication, decision-making, and problem-solving skills, as well as the ability to remain calm and professional in highly stressful situations.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Prepare work schedules to ensure sufficient personnel are available to meet shift and workload demands.
  • Review dispatch operations to identify technical and operational training needs and recommend improvements.
  • Assign duties and review work for compliance with established policies and procedures.
  • Coordinate emergency calls and relay information and requests for assistance involving law enforcement, fire, and other emergency response agencies.
  • Enter, update, and retrieve information from police computer systems regarding wanted persons, stolen property, vehicle registrations, stolen vehicles, and other information.
  • Test, inspect, and operate radio, telephone, computer, and other communications equipment, including emergency weather alarm sirens.
  • Perform the duties of subordinate dispatch personnel as needed.
  • Participate in meetings with representatives from police, fire, the public, and other groups to develop, review, and update dispatch center policies and procedures.
  • Assist with training, assigning, directing, and evaluating the work of subordinate employees.
  • Address employee concerns and assist with resolving operational problems.
  • Maintain regular and reliable attendance.
  • Perform other related duties as required or assigned.

Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Specialized schooling and/or on-the-job education in a related skill area.
  • At least two years of related experience and/or training.
  • Seven to eleven months of related management or supervisory experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must achieve and maintain certification through the Arkansas Crime Information Center (ACIC).
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Arkansas Driver's License.
  • APCO Certification preferred.
  • Proficiency with computers, databases, spreadsheets, word processing, typing, and data entry.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to prepare reports, correspondence, and policies and procedures.
  • Ability to effectively supervise employees, assign work, and ensure compliance with established procedures.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment and make decisions in high-pressure situations.
  • Must be thoroughly familiar with emergency 911 systems and emergency severe weather alarm and warning systems.
  • Must be able to work effectively under highly charged and stressful conditions.

Working Conditions & Physical Requirements:

  • Moderate noise environment.
  • Primarily sedentary work requiring extended periods of sitting and concentration.
  • Occasional standing and walking.
  • Continuous use of hands and arms and frequent verbal communication.
  • Must occasionally be able to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
  • Requires close and color vision.
  • Must be able to operate computers, radios, telephones, and other communications equipment.
  • Must be able to perform the duties of subordinate telecommunicator positions when operational needs require.
