Lead Structural Engineer – Los Angeles, CA / Seattle, WA (remote options)WSP is seeking a Lead Structural Engineer to join its Los Angeles and Seattle offices. The role involves leading design and technical support for complex building projects across multiple sectors, including science/technology, healthcare, commercial, public safety, K-12, and higher education.Responsibilities Apply high-level structural engineering techniques to identify improvements across all project phases – concept, preliminary, final design, procurement, construction, and operation.Conduct research, site investigations, and inspections to evaluate proposed and existing conditions against applicable codes and permits.Develop construction plans, specifications, cost estimates, safety and phasing plans, and updated layouts in coordination with owners, other disciplines, and clients.Lead projects from inception to completion, ensuring durability, structural soundness, and regulatory compliance.Integrate advanced technologies, monitoring devices, materials, and modeling techniques to enhance safety and functionality.Oversee cross-functional engineering, architectural, and planning teams on multiple concurrent projects, managing budgets, hours, expenses, and technical deliverables.Review and approve design plans, ensuring data integrity and code compliance.Prepare data visualizations, reports, sketches, calculations, and 2D/3D illustrations for technical and client presentations.Produce detailed technical reports and presentations on research, concepts, and recommendations for structural and environmental issues.Analyze investigation data to develop action plans for risk mitigation.Prepare and implement Site Health and Safety Plans (HASPs).Engage regulatory agencies, subcontractors, and clients professionally.Collaborate with federal, state, regional, and local authorities on improvement and development projects, including business development opportunities.Stay current with the latest structural engineering practices and standards.Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making, adhering to WSP's Code of Conduct.Perform any other responsibilities required by business needs.Required Qualifications Bachelor's Degree in Structural or Civil Engineering (or closely related discipline).7–10 years of post‑education experience in structural or civil design.Professional Engineer (PE) license.Proficiency in structural engineering principles, design/build processes, and project application.Experience with building structural planning, design, and construction management, including rehabilitation, new design, and construction projects.Knowledge of sustainability processes and reducing hazardous substances/greenhouse gas emissions.Strong knowledge of structural/civil construction laws, codes, regulations, and record‑keeping requirements.Ability to perform technical computations, interpret plans and specifications, and compare results to regulations.Experience conducting inspections and investigations of building and structure design and construction.Excellent interpersonal and communication skills for engineering and non‑engineering audiences.High-level self‑leadership, attention to detail, multitasking, and prioritization in a dynamic environment.Capacity to work independently with minimal oversight while providing guidance to junior team members under QA/QC.Proficiency with technical writing, office automation, structural software (ETABS, RAM), BIM, mathematics, physics, predictive models, spreadsheets, and related tools.Strong critical thinking and problem‑solving skills to analyze data, tests, and derive logical solutions.Experience coordinating and directing subcontractors to complete tasks safely and efficiently.Track record of upholding workplace safety and compliance with health, safety, drug/alcohol, and harassment policies.Flexibility to work schedules that may extend beyond typical hours.Occasional travel may be required.Preferred Qualifications Master's Degree in Structural Engineering.Structural Engineer (SE) license.Benefits WSP provides a comprehensive benefits suite including medical, dental, vision, disability, life insurance, retirement savings, paid sick leave, paid vacation, paid parental leave, and paid bereavement time.
