Select Source Solutions is seeking a Lead Software Engineer – Aviation & Mission Systems to serve as the senior technical lead for the architecture, development, modernization, integration, testing, deployment, maintenance, and support of mission-critical applications supporting specialized aircraft and uncrewed aircraft systems.
This role supports aviation and scientific missions, including hurricane research and forecasting, atmospheric and remote-sensing operations, environmental assessments, surveys, and emergency response activities.
The successful candidate will provide hands-on software engineering leadership while collaborating with developers, scientists, engineers, operational users, technical personnel, and other stakeholders to deliver secure, reliable, scalable, and mission-ready software solutions.
This position supports an on-site and remote work environment.
What You Will Do in This Role
As the Lead Software Engineer – Aviation & Mission Systems, you will provide hands-on technical leadership across the full Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC), from architecture and requirements analysis through development, testing, deployment, sustainment, and production support.
Responsibilities include:
- Serve as the senior technical lead for software development, modernization, integration, and sustainment activities supporting mission-critical applications.
- Lead application architecture, requirements analysis, technical design, development, integration, testing, deployment, and maintenance.
- Translate operational and mission requirements into effective, secure, and reliable technical solutions.
- Provide hands-on technical leadership and direction to software and database developers while remaining actively involved in engineering, development, and troubleshooting.
- Design, develop, enhance, and maintain applications using C#, .NET/.NET Core, ASP.NET, JavaScript, SQL, Visual Studio, and relational database technologies.
- Architect, develop, and support databases and application interfaces using SQL Server, MySQL, Oracle, APIs, and related technologies.
- Lead comprehensive software testing, including unit, system, functional, interface, regression, performance, integration/interoperability, and end-user testing.
- Conduct architecture and design reviews, code reviews and walkthroughs, test-plan evaluations, and technical documentation reviews to ensure quality and production readiness.
- Manage or support source-code control, configuration management, change management, release management, deployment, and software quality assurance activities.
- Troubleshoot mission-critical production applications and provide or coordinate Tier 1–3 technical support to quickly resolve software issues.
- Develop and maintain software architecture, system configuration, deployment, application support, and user documentation.
- Promote engineering best practices related to software quality, maintainability, scalability, security, performance, and reliability.
- Ensure software development and sustainment activities follow Agile practices, CMMI Level 3 standards, and applicable cybersecurity, configuration-management, and change-management requirements.
- Collaborate with technical teams, operational users, scientists, engineers, and customer stakeholders throughout the application lifecycle.
What You Will Bring
Required Qualifications
- 10+ years of progressive software engineering, software development, or application development experience.
- 3–5 years of experience serving as a Software Lead, Technical Lead, Software Architect, Lead Developer, Lead Software Engineer, or in a comparable technical leadership role.
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, Information Systems, Information Technology, or a related STEM discipline.
- Advanced hands-on experience with C#, .NET/.NET Core, JavaScript, SQL, and enterprise database technologies.
- Demonstrated experience leading the full Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC).
- Experience designing, developing, modernizing, integrating, and supporting complex production-level applications and databases.
- Strong knowledge of Agile development, software quality assurance, software testing, source-code control, configuration management, change management, and release management.
- Experience supporting secure enterprise, government, or similarly regulated applications within formal cybersecurity and configuration-control environments.
- Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills for mission-critical or production systems.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to collaborate effectively with technical and operational stakeholders.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience supporting federal government or other highly regulated environments.
- Experience with aviation, aircraft operations, uncrewed aircraft systems (UAS), scientific computing, environmental systems, remote sensing, or operational mission systems.
- Experience with Microsoft Azure, Amazon Web Services (AWS), or other cloud application technologies.
- Experience with APIs, data integration, DevSecOps, and CI/CD pipelines.
- Experience with application modernization or cloud-migration initiatives.
- Certified ScrumMaster (CSM), Professional Scrum Master I (PSM I), or comparable Agile certification.
- Microsoft, Azure, AWS, cloud, software development, or comparable technical certification.

Work Environment
- This work is normally completed in a combination of on-site and remote environments.
- Work may be performed at Select Source Solutions, customer, or designated government facilities based on operational and contract requirements.
Physical Demands
- Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
- Must be able to access and navigate applicable Select Source Solutions and client facilities.
Travel Required
- Travel may be required on an as-needed basis.
