General Statement of Duties

Under supervision, performs a variety of work assigned to a crew of Sewer Maintenance personnel; and performs lead worker functions as assigned. The Lead Sewer Maintenance Worker differs from the Sewer Maintenance Worker in the level of responsibility. This is a working lead position. The incumbent may provide direction, establish priorities, assign work tasks and coordinate assigned work tasks of an assigned work crew. The work is performed under general direction of a Public Works Section Chief. The nature of the work performed requires that an employee in this class be able perform and oversee the work of a crew and establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees and the public. The principal duties of this class are performed in an outdoor work environment with potential personal hazards.

Acceptable Experience and Training

  • Graduation from High School or possession of a GED; and
  • Considerable (3 years) experience on an assigned work crew; or
  • Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to perform the work.

Required Special Qualifications

  • Candidates for positions in this class must pass a post-employment offer physical examination and drug screen.
  • Possession of a valid Iowa Class B CDL allowing the operation of vehicles with airbrakes.
  • On call status.

  • Performs all activities required of a work crew in the Sewer Maintenance Division of the Department of Public Works.
  • Consults with Public Works Section Chief as required to prioritize and schedule work.
  • Prepares daily progress reports to track personnel, equipment and supplies used on projects.
  • Establishes task priorities and time frames for assigned personnel.
  • Monitors completion of job assignments to ensure compliance with standards and instructions.
  • Completes thorough and accurate reports on daily work activities, including tasks completed.
  • Provides needed information and demonstrations concerning how to perform certain work tasks to new employees in the same or similar class of positions.
  • Keeps immediate supervisor and designated others fully and accurately informed concerning work progress, including present and potential work problems and suggestions for new or improved ways of addressing such problems.
  • Attends meetings, conferences, workshops and training sessions and reviews publications and audio-visual materials to become and remain current on the principles, practices and new developments in assigned work areas.
  • Responds to citizens questions and comments in a courteous and timely manner; Notifies supervisory personnel of conditions affecting the proper operation of the assigned tasks, including operating equipment, workplace safety, and task completion; May assume the duties of the Public Works Crew Chief in their absence.
