Lead Quality Technician - Mechanical

The Opportunity

The Lead Quality Technician, Mechanical independently performs incoming, in-process, and/or final inspections, including ready-to-ship inspections of mechanical products or equipment and supports inspections of greater complexity. The position manages inspection activities across multiple assigned units, provides technical guidance to Quality Technicians, and promotes consistent use of drawings, bills of material, inspection checklists, internal standards, and customer requirements.

What you will do?

• Independently perform incoming, in-process, and/or final inspections of mechanical products or equipment.
• Interpret mechanical drawings, bills of material, specifications, work instructions, inspection checklists, and acceptance criteria.
• Inspect structural assemblies, equipment supports, piping systems, pumps, valves, tanks, and related mechanical components.
• Verify equipment placement, orientation, fit-up, alignment, level, clearances, hardware, bolting, torque, and assembly completeness.
• Inspect flanged and threaded piping connections, gaskets, fittings, pipe supports, flange bolting, and torque marks.
• Verify that pressure tests, leak tests, cleaning, and other mechanical checks have been completed and properly documented.
• Plan and complete inspection activities across multiple assigned units based on production priorities and inspection requirements.
• Provide technical guidance to Quality Technicians regarding inspection methods, drawings, checklists, tools, and acceptance criteria.
• Identify and document nonconforming conditions and support containment of affected components, assemblies, or units.
• Verify rework, corrections, and containment actions before accepting the affected work.
• Confirm that required inspections, tests, documentation, and open Quality items are complete before final acceptance.
• Escalate unclear requirements, repeat defects, significant risks, incomplete documentation, and release concerns.
• Support investigations by providing inspection records, measurements, photographs, and other objective evidence.
• Assist with onboarding and task-specific training of Mechanical Quality Technicians.
• Recommend practical improvements to inspection checklists, work instructions, and inspection methods.
• Support first-build, customer, audit, and factory acceptance activities as assigned.
• Make conformance decisions based on approved requirements and objective evidence, without allowing production schedules or delivery pressure to influence inspection results.
• Maintain accurate records and communicate inspection findings and product concerns clearly, promptly, and with integrity.

Required Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• Three or more years of mechanical manufacturing, assembly, fabrication, testing, or inspection experience preferred.
• Demonstrated experience independently inspecting mechanical products or equipment, piping, structural assemblies, or industrial equipment.
• Experience providing technical assistance or task-specific training to other employees preferred.
• Working knowledge of mechanical products or equipment, structural steel, piping systems, pumps, valves, tanks, supports, and related equipment.
• Ability to interpret mechanical drawings, bills of material, dimensions, tolerances, assembly details, specifications, and inspection criteria.
• Knowledge of flanged and threaded piping connections, gaskets, bolting, torque, alignment, fit-up, and cleanliness controls.
• Proficiency with torque wrenches, levels, calipers, measuring tapes, gauges, and related inspection equipment.
• Working knowledge of nonconformance identification, product control, containment, correction verification, and final acceptance.
• Strong communication, organization, prioritization, technical guidance, and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to manage inspection work across multiple units and changing production priorities.
• Basic computer skills and the ability to use computers to access drawings and documentation, complete inspection records, and communicate inspection results preferred.

Preferred Qualifications

• Technical certificate or associate degree in mechanical technology, welding, piping, fabrication, industrial technology, or a related field preferred.
