Lead Heavy Equipment Mechanic

The Lead Heavy Equipment Mechanic is responsible for overseeing the inspection, preventive maintenance, diagnostics, and repair of all heavy equipment assigned to the facility. This role provides technical leadership to the maintenance team, ensures equipment reliability and safety, assigns daily work, and assists with troubleshooting complex mechanical and hydraulic issues. The Lead Mechanic ensures repairs are completed efficiently while maintaining accurate maintenance records and complying with all company safety policies

EDUCATION

• High school diploma or GED preferred.

EXPERIENCE

• Minimum of 5 years of experience repairing and maintaining heavy equipment, including dozers, excavators, forklifts, wheel loaders, skid steers, backhoes, cranes, and other diesel-powered off-road equipment.
• Minimum of 2 years of experience in a Lead Heavy Equipment Mechanic or supervisory role, overseeing daily maintenance activities, assigning work, mentoring mechanics, and ensuring repairs are completed safely and efficiently.
• Strong experience diagnosing, troubleshooting, and repairing diesel engines, hydraulic systems, electrical systems, powertrain components, braking systems, steering systems, and undercarriages.
• Proficient in performing preventive maintenance, inspections, major component replacements, and equipment overhauls.
• Experience using diagnostic software, service manuals, and computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS) is preferred.
• Ability to read and interpret hydraulic schematics, electrical diagrams, and equipment service manuals.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following, but are not limited to:

• Determines vehicle condition by conducting inspections and diagnostic tests, identifying worn and damaged parts.
• Keeps equipment available for use by completing preventive maintenance schedules; installing component and part upgrades; controlling corrosion; completing winterization procedures.
• Corrects vehicle deficiencies by removing, repairing, adjusting, overhauling, assembling, disassembling, and replacing major assemblies, sub-assemblies, components, parts, or systems, such as, power and drive trains, electrical, air conditioning, fuel, emission, brake, steering, hydraulics; completes machine shop operations; adjusting and alignments including bearing loads, gear tooth contact, valve mechanisms, governors, oil systems, control linkages, clutches, and traction units.
• Verifies vehicle performance by conducting test drives; adjusting controls and systems.
• Complies with federal and state vehicle requirements by testing engine, safety, and combustion control standards.
• Maintains vehicle appearance by cleaning, washing, and painting.
• Maintains vehicle records by annotating services and repairs.
• Keeps shop equipment operating by following operating instructions; troubleshooting breakdowns; maintaining supplies; performing preventive maintenance; calling for repairs.
• Contains costs by using warranty, evaluating service and parts options.
• Keeps supplies ready by inventorying stock; placing orders; verifying receipt.
• Updates job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities; reading technical and regulation publications.
• Enhances maintenance department and organization reputation by accepting ownership for accomplishing new and different requests; exploring opportunities to add value to job accomplishments.
• Escalate issues to the Maintenance Manager as needed.
• Other related duties as required.
