Lead Carpenter Job Description

Purpose: The Lead Carpenter maintains school buildings in top condition to ensure full and productive use of district facilities. To accomplish these tasks, the Lead Carpenter must work closely with the staff and administration of Derby Public Schools.

Responsible to: Maintenance Supervisor

Salary: Licensed Trade Hourly Rate Schedule, Level 1

Classification of Employment: Non-Exempt

Qualifications:

1. High school diploma or equivalent.
2. Knowledge and experience in general carpentry skills.
3. Hold a valid Journeyman Carpentry license.
4. Valid Kansas driver's license.

Essential Functions:

1. Knowledge, Skill and Abilities

a. Maintain school buildings in top condition to ensure full and productive use of district facilities. b. Ensure that all activities conform to district guidelines. c. Communicate effectively with all members of the school district. d. React to change productively and handle other tasks as assigned. e. Appropriately operate all equipment and machinery as necessary. f. Direct all carpentry personnel and repair work performed by the district. g. Assume primary responsibility for the safe condition of flooring, door frames, doors, window frames, staircases, stair treads, wall paneling, ceiling paneling, hardware and similar structural elements in facilities owned or operated by the school district. h. Comply with all district policies, rules and regulations.

2. Physical Requirements/Environmental Conditions:

a. Requires prolonged sitting or standing. b. Requires physical exertion to manually move, lift, carry, pull, or push heavy objects or materials. c. Requires stooping, kneeling, crawling, bending, turning, and reaching. d. Requires climbing and balancing. e. Must be able to work indoors and outdoors year-round. f. Must be able to work in noisy and crowded environments. g. Must be able to work in and around dust, fumes, and odors. h. Must be able to lift a minimum of 25 pounds. i. Requires regular attendance and/or physical presence at the job.

General Responsibilities:

1. Assist in maintaining school buildings.
2. Assist in promoting the safety, health, and comfort of students and employees in school buildings and grounds.
3. Maintain a high standard of safety, cleanliness, and efficiency in all maintenance and repair projects.
4. Perform maintenance, repair, and installation in connection with the exterior and interior of buildings.
5. Move equipment and materials within and between school buildings.
6. Direct the erecting of scaffolding, formation of concrete forms, and similar nonstructural projects.
7. Assist in snow removal from school district building walkways, entrances and parking areas.
8. Keep abreast of new information, innovative ideas and techniques.
9. Instruct custodians and maintenance workers on the proper use and care of hand tools, equipment, hardware and materials.
10. Adhere to all district health and safety policies.
11. Other duties as assigned by the maintenance supervisor, which are consistent with the general requirements and qualifications of the position.
