Laser Welding Operator - 1st Shift

As a Laser Welding Operator at Lexington Medical, you will set up and run the laser welding equipment that joins the components inside a surgical stapler used in operating rooms. The welds you produce have to hold in surgery, so you will inspect and document your own work against written specifications rather than pass it down the line unchecked. Manufacturing engineering and quality work in the same building in Bedford, which means a problem you spot at the machine gets looked at by the people who can actually change the process.

About the Role

As a Laser Welding Operator at Lexington Medical, you will perform laser welding operations on components for our AEON surgical stapling products, working from drawings, process specifications, and detailed assembly instructions. You will set up the welding equipment, run production, inspect and test welded assemblies, and keep the records that our Quality System requires for every lot. The parts are small and the tolerances are tight, so the work rewards steady hands and close attention.

This position is a full-time temporary role with the potential to convert to a regular employee.

Responsibilities

• Set up and operate laser welding equipment for AEON surgical stapling components, holding the precision the product requires.
• Perform laser welding operations to drawings and process specifications, in compliance with applicable industry standards.
• Inspect and test welded assemblies, and keep accurate production and inspection records for each lot.
• Work from detailed assembly instructions, drawings, and written procedures.
• Report quality, process, equipment, and material problems to management promptly, and hold suspect parts before they move to the next operation.
• Identify process improvement and optimization opportunities from what you see at the machine, and work with manufacturing engineering to try them.
• Follow all Lexington Medical Quality System procedures and applicable safety and regulatory requirements.
• Keep your work area clean and organized to support cleanroom and manufacturing requirements.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Some hands-on experience with laser welding, or with a similar joining or fabrication process such as resistance welding, micro-soldering, or brazing.
• Able to read and comprehend procedures and work instructions written in English.
• Able to work to written specifications and record data accurately.
• Well organized and detail oriented, with the patience for close, repetitive precision work.
• Basic computer skills for entering production and inspection records.
• Small parts assembly experience is strongly preferred.
• Medical device or other regulated industry experience is a plus.
• Cleanroom experience is a plus.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to manipulate small hand tools and assemble small mechanical parts.
• Ability to use hands to handle or feel.
• Ability to frequently sit, stand, walk, reach within hands and arm length, stoop, kneel, and crouch.
• Ability to regularly lift or move up to 10 pounds, and occasionally lift or move up to 25 pounds.
• Specific vision requirements include close vision and color vision.

What Success Looks Like

• Within your first several weeks, you are setting up and running welds on your own, meeting quality and yield expectations without rework.
• Over a few months, you become one of the operators the team relies on for the more difficult welds, and you catch process drift before it turns into scrap.

Location & Work Arrangement

This position is based at our headquarters in Bedford, Massachusetts, in the Greater Boston area, and is an on-site role. The schedule is first shift, Monday through Friday, 5:30 AM to 1:30 PM. This is a full-time temporary position with the potential to convert to a regular employee.

Salary Range

$20 to $21 USD per hour
