Job Summary and Qualifications

The Lactation Consultant (LC) is an allied healthcare professional that is experienced to provide lactation and clinical care for the lactating mother. The NICU LC will implement and maintain a comprehensive Lactation Support Program involving the mothers of high risk neonates admitted to the NICU and evidenced based, safe, cost effective patient care according to established policies and procedures to assist breastfeeding women in achieving the skills needed for successful breastfeeding.

In this role:

  • You will increase breastfeeding rates, especially duration and exclusivity
  • You will enhance father engagement
  • You will provide LC education to NICU RNs regarding the individualized lactation plan to support continuity of care for the neonate.
  • You will validate efficacy of the lactation plan as a part of the multidisciplinary NICU team
  • You will provide maternal lactation support services in antepartum, post-partum and NICU during the admission stay of their baby.
  • You will enhance referral networks with health care provider systems.
  • You will assist with Data collection as needed
  • You will provide Education support in Hospital and Community outreach
  • You will complete consultative reporting and communication with Physicians

What qualifications you will need:

  • Bachelor’s Degree required in Healthcare related field such as Nursing, Speech and Language therapy, Occupational Therapy required
  • Master’s Degree preferred
  • Current license to practice in related healthcare field
  • Current certification with the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners (IBLCE) required
  • Must be able to demonstrate provision of lactation care, education and counseling to at least 50 patients within the past 5 yrs. OR
  • Skills in physical assessment, technological skills and lactation theory and practice are required.
  • Teaching experience in patient education preferred
  • NICU LC works in conjunction with the breast-feeding family’s primary Neonatologist
  • Standards of Practice for IBCLC LC define the parameters of Lactation Consultation Practice.
  • NICU LC works with mothers of the high-risk neonate to develop individualized plans of care for management of breastfeeding mothers and participates in multidisciplinary rounding on the unit.
