Laboratory Technician Senior Physical & Life Sciences

Under the direction of the Laboratory Supervisor, the Senior Lab Technician provides technical and operational support for instructional laboratories within the life and physical sciences. The position contributes to the safe, efficient, and effective operation of laboratory facilities, equipment, materials, and resources that support student learning and faculty instruction.

The Senior Lab Technician works collaboratively with faculty, staff, students, administrators, vendors, and service personnel and applies sound technical knowledge, safety practices, organization, communication, and problem-solving skills in a diverse educational environment. Essential Functions

60% - Laboratory Preparation and Operations:

Prepares, organize, and set up complex laboratory equipment, supplies, solutions, and materials for student laboratory exercises. Replenish, clean, maintain, and properly store laboratory materials and equipment. Coordinates with faculty, staff, and vendors to support and optimize laboratory operations.

15% - Student Worker Supervision and Training:

Provides work direction and scheduling for student employees. Train, advise, and mentor student workers in the proper use, cleaning, and maintenance of laboratory equipment and facilities, as well as in the preparation of laboratory materials, including solutions and media.

10% - Purchasing, Inventory, and Equipment Maintenance:

Purchases and receive laboratory materials, supplies, and equipment. Maintains accurate records of equipment and inventory. Assemble, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair complex laboratory equipment as needed. Maintains and update financial and purchasing records.

10% - Animal and Plant Care:

Provides care for laboratory animals and plants used in general biology courses. Maintains and clean tanks and related environments, monitor feeding schedules, maintain inventories, and research appropriate animal-care practices and plant supplies to support instructional needs.

5% - Laboratory Safety and Hazardous Materials:

Determines and implement appropriate procedures for the safe handling, storage, and disposal of hazardous materials. Maintains current Safety Data Sheets (SDS) and ensures laboratory practices comply with applicable safety requirements. Other duties as assigned.
