Under the direction of the Laboratory Director, supervises the activities of a clinical laboratory section and ensures its smooth and efficient functioning. This position also requires independent action to establish own short-range plans within scope of hospital wide policy and common goals, referring to senior management on matters requiring clarification, interpretation, or exception to hospital wide policy.Essential Functions 1. Demonstrates safe and competent use of equipment and software to carry out duties. Includes; accurate entry of patient information, billing type and specimen information into software systems such as Sunquest and Eclipses. 2. Prioritize workflow by medical necessity and priority. Evaluates workload and makes staffing changes as needed. 3. Performs testing ensuring that instrumentation is operating within established guidelines, including maintenance and troubleshooting as assigned 4. Performs testing, process and packaging specimens according to procedure manual including appropriate specimen and complying with all age specific related requirements; Reports results in accordance to priority of the specimen and with appropriate quality assurance and quality control. Routinely reviews quality control, quality assurance data and maintenance records. 5. Provides appropriate turnaround time on Laboratory testing and communicates with appropriate caregivers when delay in testing occurs. Evaluates processes within laboratory section and if needed makes changes to improve the efficiency of current processes. 6. Performs phlebotomies and urine drug screens as requested including special collections. Maintains inventory levels. receives, labels, and restocks inventory 7. Contributes to society through activities that lead to excellent patient outcomes through timely, effective efficient and safe care. Actively participates in the improvement of Laboratory quality indicators and outcomes. Such activities may include participating in professional organizations or attending instrumentation training 8. Evaluates need, actively participates in the selection, and implements new instrumentation including developing and enforcing policies and procedures. 9. Makes recommendations for departmental budgets including capital, staffing and action plans. Provide coverage for Laboratory Director in their absence 10. Develops program to orient, train and maintain competency for employees; Prepares documents and coordinates instruction and evaluation of Laboratory students.
