Position Overview

The Laboratory Manager will provide operational leadership and oversight for laboratory services across three Cancer Center laboratory locations, including:

  • Emily Couric Cancer Center

  • Fishersville Cancer Center (opening March 2027)

  • Pantops Cancer Center (opening Fall 2027)

Reporting to the Director of Clinical Laboratories, this leader will oversee all laboratory activities, personnel, quality initiatives, and operational performance across the Cancer Center laboratory network.

The successful candidate will work closely with laboratory and clinical leaders to ensure exceptional service delivery, regulatory compliance, and patient-centered care.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide leadership and oversight of laboratory operations across three outpatient cancer center laboratories.

  • Lead startup planning, implementation, and operational readiness activities for new laboratory locations.

  • Recruit, hire, onboard, and develop laboratory personnel.

  • Manage staffing, scheduling, performance management, and employee engagement initiatives.

  • Partner with Oncology Service Line leaders and key laboratory stakeholders.

  • Collaborate with Core Laboratory, Phlebotomy, Point of Care Testing, and Customer Service leadership teams.

  • Ensure adherence to regulatory, accreditation, and quality standards.

  • Support implementation and validation of new laboratory equipment, instruments, and testing methodologies.

  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives focused on quality, efficiency, and patient outcomes.

  • Foster a culture of teamwork, accountability, innovation, and service excellence.

What Success Looks Like

Within your first 6 to 12 months, you will:

  • Successfully launch two new Cancer Center laboratories.

  • Build, onboard, and train new laboratory teams.

  • Establish strong operational partnerships across Oncology and Laboratory Services.

  • Create a highly engaged, patient-focused culture across all three locations.

  • Ensure regulatory readiness and operational excellence throughout the expansion process.

Primary Qualifications

  • Bachelor''s degree in Medical Laboratory Science or related field.

  • Demonstrated laboratory leadership experience.

  • Experience managing laboratory personnel and operations.

  • Strong project management skills.

  • Knowledge of CAP accreditation standards and regulatory requirements.

  • Excellent communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills.

  • Ability to effectively lead teams across multiple locations.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master''s degree.

  • Core Laboratory experience.

  • Previous laboratory management experience.

  • Experience with laboratory startup, expansion, or growth initiatives.

  • Experience validating and implementing laboratory instruments, equipment, and testing methods.

  • Proven success driving quality improvement, operational excellence, and employee engagement initiatives.

Schedule & Work Environment

  • Full-time

  • Monday through Friday

  • Flexibility required to meet operational needs

  • Regular travel between Cancer Center laboratory locations

This role oversees approximately 15 direct reports, including a Lead Laboratory Technologist.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Education: Bachelor's Degree with completion of a NAACLS approved MLS/CLS/HTL or equivalent program.

EXPERIENCE: 2 years of increasing supervisory, managerial and/or leadership experience in a complex health environment required, 4 years preferred.

LICENSE/CERTIFICATION: MLS/CLS, CT, HTL, ASCP or equivalent. May require a valid Virginia Driver's License.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require traveling some distance to attend meetings, and programs.

The pay range for this role is $93,142.40 - $162,195.00 annually. Individual compensation will be determined by the selected candidate''s qualifications, previous work experience, and/or education.
