The Department of Biology at the University of Virginia's College and Graduate School of Arts & Sciences, seeks applications for a full-time Laboratory Technician to support the research of Dr. Harris Kaplan. The Kaplan Lab studies neuronal circuits regulating sleep in infant and adult mice.
The technician will work directly with Dr. Kaplan to support research in the lab located in the Gilmer Hall. They will assist with mouse brain histology, molecular biology, and mouse behavior experiments. For more information, please visit: Department of Biology.
The successful candidate will be expected to perform the following duties:
Perform mouse brain dissections, slicing, staining, and microscopy
Prepare mouse brain tissue samples for single-cell sequencing
Conduct mouse behavior experiments
Manage mouse colony including genotyping
Perform molecular biology tasks (e.g. cloning transgenic constructs)
Record accurate information and logs of experimental data
Support other lab members with collection of data
In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned
Minimum Qualifications:
Education: High school diploma or equivalent.
Experience: At least 1 year of lab experience, which may include student experience.
Preferred Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in biology or a related field
Experience with molecular biology and rodent brain histology.
Excellent communication and organizational skills
Ability to effectively incorporate feedback
Physical Demands: This position can spend extensive periods of time standing and squatting while conducting experiments or caring for animals. Also requires keyboarding and other bench work and animal procedures requiring fine finger manipulation.
Salary Range: The anticipated hiring range is $19.00-$21.00/hour commensurate with education and experience.
Anticipated start date: August - September 2026.
