Laboratory Technical Assistant: This 1.0 FTE/Full-time position is scheduled to work 10-HR variable shifts and is UFCW represented.
Compensation: Non-Exempt, $23.61/HR — $38.53/HR. Placement within this range is based on years of applicable experience.

Job Summary:
Performs waived, moderate, and high complexity laboratory techniques on specimens that are cleared by CLIA and other agencies that define and govern authorized scope of work. Performs other laboratory work that supports the operation of the laboratory, including and not limited to those requiring familiarity with testing systems, filing, and indexing of information retrieval systems, and instrument-related troubleshooting.
Job Specific Duties & Responsibilities:
- Performs accurate and timely ‘waived’ biomedical laboratory techniques, including pre-analytical and post-analytical specimen analysis. Operates instruments and follows established procedures for collecting and processing specimens for further analysis.
- Performs routine calibrations, quality control assessments prior to testing samples, and maintenance on instruments and equipment at the scheduled intervals as recommended by the manufacturer and as required by CLIA regulations.
- Recognizes and troubleshoots equipment malfunctions, notifies the appropriate technical staff. Recognizes factors that affect measurements and results and takes appropriate action according to predetermined protocols.
- Maintain accurate records of instrument maintenance, calibration, and quality control checks. Participates in quality and process improvements to enhance quality patient care and reduce waste.
- Assist in proficiency testing and treat survey samples in the same manner as patient specimens while following CLIA guidelines.
- Follows-up on issues found during pre-analytical, analytical, and post-analytical phases.
- Perform phlebotomy and specimen processing as necessary to balance departmental workload and train others.
- Assists with scheduling patients for drawing of specimens, ensuring efficient patient flow and use of resources. Assists Lab Technologists with test preparations.
- Performs clerical tasks as necessary to support department operations. Sees to it that records are up-to-date, results are collected, maintained, and distributed appropriately.
- Maintains supply inventory by checking stock to determine inventory levels, anticipating needs, placing and expediting purchase orders, and verifying receipts.
- Stays up-to-date with annual competency and continuing education requirements as per hospital policy. Participates in staff meetings, educational in-services, process/quality improvement initiatives, and identifies and makes recommendations for improvement.

Required Education and Experience:
- High School Diploma or equivalent, required.
- 3–5 years of progressive experience in a hospital or clinic lab setting.
- An Associate’s degree in a laboratory or equivalent health care profession is desirable and may substitute for some experience.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Knowledge of filing and record keeping practices along with hospital/medical terminology.
- Strong telephone and verbal skills, along with active listening. Ability to handle a high volume of calls in a timely and professional manner.
- Ability to follow protocols and work efficiently in an environment that includes varying workloads and interruptions. Able to work collaboratively with Radiologic Technologists, Providers, and other facilities as needed.
- Knowledge of CPT/ICD-10 codes.
- Ability to understand and implement HIPAA compliance.
