Position Summary

The role of the Laboratory Assistant reports to the Laboratory Supervisor or Director of Laboratory. This position is responsible for providing support for Medical Laboratory Technicians and Medical Laboratory Scientists and performs duties under the supervision of a Medical Laboratory Scientist.

Essential Position Responsibilities

  • Represents the laboratory as a model of the behavioral standards of the institution; supports the Mission, Vision, and Values of the organization; promotes a respectful work environment.
  • Verifies accuracy of patient and specimen information 100% of the time.
  • Examines specimens for adequacy and appropriateness.
  • Properly labels specimens and prepares aliquots with 100% positive patient/specimen identification.
  • Receives and processes specimens (delivers, centrifuges, aliquots, etc) quickly to ensure established turn-around-time goals are met.
  • Assists with inquiries pertaining to specimen requirements, specimen stability, and test turn-around-times.
  • Assists with phlebotomy as needed.
  • Assists with send out specimen processing.
  • Assist point of care team as needed.
  • Maintaining a clean working environment and sanitizing benchtops and equipment.

Qualifications

  • Education: High school diploma or GED
  • Licensure and Certifications: Laboratory Assistant and Phlebotomy Certification, preferred.
  • Experience: 1-year medical laboratory assistant experience is preferred.

Work Environment: This position spends 90% of work time standing and/or walking while pushing, pulling, lifting, and/or carrying up to 50 lbs. This position spends 10% of time sitting while performing work in a standard office environment. This position has potential exposure to body fluids and communicable diseases. This position requires acute visual perception to read test orders for requisitions or test labels. This position serves a culturally and linguistically diverse patient population.
